Sorry but Lucie is definitely a better vocalist than Stacey. Wider range and far more versatile.

For a while, Simon wanted it last year. Diana Vicker's was an early "chosen one", and Simon only turned on her, when the public did. His choice of "Hallelujah" as the winners single was oviously designed to favour Diana, as she had sung it before the live shows. But Simon wanted Diana to win at one point.

Simon just didn't rate Lucie (and he obviously doesn't rate Stacey, who isn't as vocally talented as Lucie). If Simon runs across a white girl that he thinks is "special" (as he did with Vickers for about 5 minutes) then he'll champion her to win.

Not forgetting, on American Idol, Simon's two favorite winners are white girls (Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood). Simon doesn't actually like Jordin Sparks very much, who like Leona, is a mixed race winner.

Lucie's a much better singer than Stacey. And Stacey really struggled on Saturday with her song.

Stacey will be doing better because of her personality. It's got nothing to do with the voice.

You forgot fantasia who is black. Simon at the time rated her the best winner of all his shows ever & imo, she is the best singer of all uk/us talent shows ever. And note to Forever Awkward, i remember seeing somewhere on the web that he did say melinda shoud've won & he said it on Larry King.

Simon is more honest on American Idol, because he doesn't really have a financial stake in who wins. They aren't being signed to his label. Sometimes he goes along with the producers "chosen one", if he's not especially passionate about any act, but if he really likes someone, he doesn't give a crap if they are super-commercial or not. He'll back them to the end. He did it with Fantasia Barrino (who did win, and was never a truly commercial prospect) and he did it with Melinda. I much prefer Simon judging on American Idol, because his opinions seem more honest. He badly wanted Melinda to win, and only endorsed Jordin in the final, because she was the lesser of two evils in his mind (it was either Jordin or Blake Lewis the dated 1980's beatboxer).

And Simon went on ABC television right after Jordin won, and said Melinda should have won. He is really apathetic about Jordin, and I don't think he rates her that much as a singer either. She's just another Lucie to him. I don't think he dislikes Jordin as a person, he just doesn't rate her as a talent or as a winner. Of all the girl winners of American Idol, Jordin is clearly his least favorite

He grew to like Kelly during the competition. He liked Carrie from the start.

I was going to mention the same two as examples of Simon not being unsupportive of white female contestants. I think the American audience is that little bit different in that respect though, particularly as Carrie is a Country singer.

When Melinda left the show, Simon actually said, "I would have preferred you over any of the other two in the final." He went on to say that it was completely the wrong result. Not to take anything anyway from Jordin, as I like her, but she has received a lot of flack about her weight and she is a strong Christian. Simon can't market her in the way he'd like to - half naked jailbait, which tend to well in the USA (Britney etc). The first album they gave Jordin was awful bar No Air, although the later AI winners don't really do very well.

To answer the OP, I don't think this has anything to do with colour. Gender - I do agree. Diana was probably the best bet of a while female winner, but I think after the by week with the cold, her chances were ruined. True she came back topping the vote the next week, but the backlash put her right to the bottom soon after.

I think Simon has been disappointed by Fantasia's musical output after the show. He liked her more as a contestant than as an actual artist. I reckon these days, Simon probably rates Jennifer Hudson more than Fantasia. Simon is quite fickle, and changes his mind a lot.

I would agree with you that Fantasia is far and away the best winner of any tv talent show that I have ever seen. that year was the strongest ever line up and she still stood out by a mile.

Yes people conveniently forget that , I agree with you that Fantasia bought something extra to the show that hasn't been repeated since . Even Adam Lambert at his best was Fantasia lite !
