It hasn't been decided yet AFAIK

Whoever is in charge of selling the rights is apparently asking for silly money

Here's an Evening Herald report from last week, but with the disclaimer that one million was the actual asking price for the Turkey-Ireland play-off in 1999 from Star TV.

TF1 generally show the French international matches in France (the home ones at least), but the play-off game in Dublin has been bought by M6, and according to the report, paid four million Euros for the honour.

I think they are actually disappointed by the level of interest, rather than asking silly money.

The price I've heard quoted is reasonable value for a terrestrial or premium satellite sports channel (assuming there isn't a landslide victory in the first leg).

I reckon the French are waiting to see what happens in the first leg, and paradoxically hoping the tie is still alive for the 2nd leg.

ITV would have been interested but I'm A Celebrity... means there is nowhere to show the game.

Could you not cancel IAC that night? I seem to remember that it was cancelled one night during the run last year because of a football match (although there were probably contractual obligations giving you no choice, to be fair).

No, it wasn't cancelled last year. It was scheduled around the football last year.

The schedule is fixed now.

It's on Setanta Ireland. Do you think they'll broadcast in the clear or will it be scrambled?

If the appalling translation is to be believed, the French Federation bid for the rights to the first leg in Dublin on behalf of TF1, were outbid and are now rather miffed.

You can read it in its originalFrench too.

How about ITV4 then? I believe the match would start at 7.45 UK time. I think it will be a winner all round unless the right holders offer the match at a stupid high price!

Come on Arius talk to the people who know at ITV and get the game!!!!!

Sky Sports shows Ireland matches for anyone here who doesn't like the banter on RTE2 a la Eamon Dunphy and his 'libelous comments'. There is of course plenty of Irish ex-pats in Britain who would benefit from Sky Sports coverage.

Sky Sports and FAI have a deal and if I was the governing body I'd be raging at Sky Sports not showing the 2nd leg at the moment.

That is in case the 1st goes belly-up from our perspective. Talk about loyalty - I assume Sky Sports/Murdoch wouldn't know the dictionary meaning of the word!

So it's RTE2/Sky Sports for the 1st leg on Saturday night and Setanta Ireland for the 2nd leg on Wednesday week - I wouldn't be surprised if TV3 picked up the free-to-air package for the Stade De France leg.

And the last time they showed us WE drew with San Marino under the 'genius' that is Steve Staunton. Better luck against the French - they are a shadow of the 1998/2000 sides.

And Raymond Domenech wouldn't be fit to tie Giovanni Trappatoni's shoe-laces!!!

After all, he is the coach who picks players by their star signs (Robert Pires)!!!!

The disaster that is Domenech will be the French down-fall against us Irish - and the FFF won't keep him in a job after that.

We made it in 1994 and the French didn't - WILL happen again!!

They'd never show a match involving teams outside the UK unless it is the EC/WC.

How about an RTE/BBC joint bid?

The game cannot be shown exclusively on pay TV in Ireland anyway so it might make sense for them to bump up the offer price by bidding with the BBC.

It would not sell any more pay TV subs in the UK at this short notice so there seems no point in ESPN or Sky bidding. In the past RTE have been able to pick up some sport cheaply curtesy of the BBC buying UK rights (also shown in ROI) and RTE coming in later wiith a complimentary offer so maybe RTE and the BBc will do a complimentary bid?

Five might have a look (maybe with TV3?).

If they cant sell the game in the UK I suppose Europort will show the match as they have shown a lot of France home games in the past (when they are not playing UK teams).

So long as it's shown on some channel we''ll not be left with an internet stream a la Ukraine vs England.

As sure as I can be that this is wrong. No deal has been done for the second leg. First leg is on RTE 2 and SKY Sports in the UK.

Looks like RTE/SKY, I looked the other day and there was nothing.

Under the Sport on TV section of the RTE website it now says World Cup Playoff (To be confirmed)

The Sky EPG has 7:30pm: Football TBA

The Irish Examiner ran an update today - still no progress.

Rest assured if RTE get the rights, it'll be brought to the greatest public attention possible. They'll probably interrupt all scheduling and it'll be top story in the news...
