PS3 Blu-Ray: Region free solution?

It's been a good few years now since the PS3 was launched, and I was just wondering if there was a way to make it multi-region, or region selectable yet?

I don't want to invest in a standalone player yet (mostly because I cant afford it), but was just curious as to whether there was a way to play region A discs on my UK PS3??

Cheers

Mark

The majority of region A discs form the states are region free.

The Bluray web site below has all the relevant info whether the disc is region free or not.

As for multiregion playback for std DVD's - AFAIK there is no known hack for the PS3.

About 70% of US titles are region free so that still leaves a few that aren't.

The Planet of the Apes boxset was what prompted me to sell my PS3 and replace it with a multiregion Bluray player but Man with the Golden Gun and Licence To Kill aswell as The Criterion Collection , X-Files Movie and others makes its usefulness an ongoing thing.

Of course , if you use the other features of the PS3 then that might not be an option , but for me I sold the PS3 , added £50 and got my standalone.

Asda do a cheapo model from a company called Curtis for about £70 which is hackable for both DVD and BD so that might be a good idea as a temporary thing until you can get a decent make

Gah wasn't very long ago I bought the DVDs! So far nothing of interest has been non-Region B that I've wanted.

I do use it for games too I'm afraid, so I'd be buying a seperate standalone player. Thankfully so far things like A Bugs Life have been region free, and most of the things I want do pop up in region B eventually, it's just things that come out a lot earlier in the US that I'd like to bring in - like UP. I know its out in France already, but the book would be in French then, and that just won't do!

The bottom line is that the PS3 has never been hacked for either dvd or Bluray and should it ever get one Sony will likely mess it up with an update.

Unless you want to spend loads the Curtis is probably the best option , but it depends on whether you find any Region A Blurays that are essential.

It took me a year with a PS3 before any titles were released that were "must haves" on Region A .

Since them I've only bought maybe a dozen titles on Region A that were superior for various reasons over the UK disc or are simply not out here.

Most of my Blurays are from the US but most are region free.

Unless you are a real die hard collector I would say you can probably live without a multiregion Bluray player for the moment
