Nothing official...

According to the Telegraph up to 800,000.

I also read on the BBC website yesterday morning that SKY reportedly had to get extra staff in...

wow! 800,000 is really a lot and a runaway success!

Guess Sky won't be ditching PPV or ads in the program for a while yet!

I can only guess phone calls.

As I said it was only a line on the BBC website.

Na no worries I did see the line but I know a few who work for SKY on here so I was hoping that they would join in, but it does say requests and as you say phone calls.

I would imagine it done well. Great PR work for the fight making its way into the Ten O Clock news and even the likes of Aljazeera were sticking with updates during the fight, rarely have a seen so much exposure given to fight over here.

I wish I saw it but could not offered to view it, looking forward Pacquiao v Cotton on Saturday. May watch UFC 105 if I can be bothered before hand

Great business for Sky.

However I wonder how many fans will purchase another Haye fight after watching such a lackluster main event.

Are Sky just as likley to get anymore fights?
Seems like it could go to the highest bidder.

Surely Sky would be the obvious choice. They have the most money to spend on sport plus by having a PPV channel, Haye would get a % of the buyrate.

I think you are probably spot on with that but can you imangine if Setanta were still going!!!
What a posistion they would be in considering he was exclusive to that channel!!

After the collapse of Setanta I would have thought Haye would have had to have went more or less cap on hand to sky.

Would not surprise me if Sky have the exclusive rights to the next few David Haye fights already

Lets face it once the Sky media machine gets into action, there is know other broadcaster can come close to matching it

Is the fight being replayed on Sky Sports during the week at all? They have shown previous PPV fights normally the following Friday?

Incorrect ESPN have far deeper pockets than Sky.

ESPN's UK/Ireland business is clearly working to a much smaller budget than Sky, so in that sense I agree with DejaVoodoo.

It's all well and good having deeper pockets in theory, but I doubt that ESPN are likely to break-away from growing a conservatively budgeted subscription service, at this time, to enter high bids for one-off events.

I can't believe Sky would push Haye in this manner only to have him on a one fight contract.

They better jump on him and sign him to a multi fight deal.

I know it is never going to happen, but I would love to see BBC/ITV pick him up and do a whole evening of programming around the fight like Benn Eubank of years gone by on ITV.

One of the main problems the BBC and ITV have when covering boxing is that neither has a pay per view outlet.
When ITV recently had the Frank Warren contract, it was a period that saw his influence as a promoter decline as his big names left him one by one.
I'm not saying big time boxing is dead on terrestrial TV, but the really big fights will take the form of a showing about a week after it happened. It's exactly what happened with Carl Froch's last fight and all of Ricky Hatton's most recent fights.
Don't rule out the Haye fight being shown on BBC2 next Sunday afternoon, or on ITV1 late on Sunday night. But a deal won't be announced until around Friday.

Haye is very good at promoting himself. His a clever guy who knows how to play the game. Sky pushed this fight really well as they made the casual fan believe that Valuev was a real giant who it would take something real amazing from Haye to win. I had people at work asking how Haye could beat such a man. I did tell them Valuev was rubbish but I think the casual fan was intrigued by the little man v the giant.

Haye v Ruiz would still do a healthy number as people will wanna see Haye defend his title. I dont think it would do 800,000 but would do very well. An impressive KO would then set up a huge fight v one of the Klitchko brothers. With the genuine 'heat' between Haye and the Klitchko's and Haye's charisma that could do 1 mil buys.

BARB figures for w/e 8 Nov show Sky Box Office Events had a weekly reach of 469,000.

I think Haye v Valuev was the only programme on this channel during that week. The channel normally has a weekly reach very close to zero (eg w/e 1 Nov weekly reach was 17,000).

So I think it's reasonable to conclude that the total audience (across all showings) for Haye v Valuev on Sky Box Office was very close to 469,000 (say approx 450,000).

However the number of PPV buys would obviously be much lower as on average there would be more than one person watching each TV.

If I had to guess I would say 250,000 to 300,000 PPV buys.

I hate the way Sky keeps shafting people in this way. Pay Per View is an American Concept which has unfortunately gained a foothold over here. Taking Pro Wrestling as an example, all weekly programming is on free basic cable, and then a monthy pay per view large event. Over here, we pay up to £40 for the privilege of watching the weekly shows, and are then expected to cough an extra £15 for the monthly event.

I've long advocated that if people stopped buying these events then they wouldn't make us pay extra for them. The fact that 450,000 households did on this occasion means this status quo will continue. Bad news indeed.

PPV ain't going anywhere. We are a fresh market for Sky and the US PPV based companies. The biggest Pro Wrestling, Boxing and MMA events are usually well hyped, so much so people will pay to see them.

We have been fairly lucky to get PPV events on our sport channels rather than PPV for many years.

Currently we have:

UFC on ESPN
Local UK Boxing on Sky Sports
Big UK Boxing on Sky Box Office
Big US Fights on Sky Sports
WWE PPV's on Sky Box Office
5 live WWE PPV's on Sky Sports

It was better, however it could be worse.
