Agree or disagree with this quote?

Do you agree or disagree with this quote. To what extent? I'm not agreeing with it, but I think it is a genius quote, thanks to bigBHM for it.

music contracted a terminal illness in the 80s, went into hospice in the 90s and died a full death in the 'naughties'
IMO Every decade has its diamonds and autumn leaves, and it is getting harder to think of new ways to make music, and market music etc... If we hadn't moved on from the 70's we would be bored of them by now.

kinda agree.... yes all decades have had their good and bad music, but what i dont like about the 80's is when SAW made manufactured music respectable. (yeah another saw bashing thread...lol). somehow they sold cheap repetitive synthetic sounds fronted by a karaoke artist to a new, young generation of music fans who subsequently grew up accepting manufactured dross as 'normal'..

but HAVE we moved on from the 70's? 'indie' and rock are still very popular, just like in the late 70's being now revised for todays markets. hence the old mantra 'music today is all generic'... it IS but its hard to see where else you can take it other then re-hashing retro, which if done in a competant way isnt a bad thing.

for long periods the 70s was utter shite as well, listen to a 70s hits album and see if you can get al the way through it without pulling your hair out

Completely disagree. People have been lamenting the demise of the good old days (music, TV, social conditions etc) for time immemorial. (Obviously, TV wasn't around in 1189!).

i think basically it depends on the age of the listener.

generally people are most into music in their teens and early 20s.

by the time they get into their late 20s / early 30s, 'music just isn't the same any more', and that's when people will lament the death of music.

but in reality, there's still plenty of great music out there - you might just have to look a bit further than the top 40.

yep.... the old teddyboys/rockers back in the 60's complained about the new beat sounds ... whos fans in turn mbemoaned the 70's glam , who inturn bemoaned punk// etc etc etc. the only thing todays music lacks is originality cos MY generation did it all first!

i think it applies to pop music in particular which is all so cynically manufactured now (i know it always has been but it seems more dishonest so now) but independent music has flourished in the internet age and is more diverse now than ever.

I'd say it goes in waves rather than downhill all the way from some perceived highpoint in the early 80s (which was a great time for music).

We are in a low at the moment.

others would argue that we just passed a (minor) peak... personall 1990 was MY personal low, i prefer music from the last ten years then c1987 - 1995, and 1971 - 1976.

Disagree. The Music Business is dying, and quite rightly so - they turned an art form into so much merchandise.

It is dying because music is back where it should be - in the hands of the people. Thanks to computers and the internet anyone can own the means to make, publicise and distribute music. The music business has become irrelevant.
