All these theories of where the show is going wrong...

What a load of rubbish. The show has survived six years already as one of the best reality UK TV shows, not to meantion the fact that the ratings this year have been the best yet.

So...

Let's keep deadlock.
Let's keep the judges and their categories.
Let's keep the show as it is.

Because it's doing just fine.

I certainly did. If you still want to complain about it, just check out the ratings and try reading a newspaper.

It's doing fine for car crash tv.
It has become a farce. Yes it gets viewers but it can't be taken seriously any more. There is so much manipulation going on.

Not to mention that viewing figures are getting better and better.

I love it just the way it is, thats not to say I wouldnt still tune in if they changed some things.

Simon must be wetting himself with joy over all the press and controversy. He is one clever dude.....

I tend to agree, kyri. The only thing I would change are some of the contestants. For instance, I think there should be at least one from either gender in the Overs. Having three guys is a bit same-y. Also, I wish the group song was sung a bit more live...

There's no doubt that from Simon's standpoint everything's going right as rain—as you say, the ratings are the highest ever.

But it will be interesting to see if they go down when/if John and Edward are sent home. The same-y ness of the other contestants is a problem. Halfway through the competition there's only one woman left. Fair enough, as far as the voting is concerned, but there are many more viewers than voters and there needs to be more variety to keep them all tuning in—so it seems to me.

There was only one woman left in the competition after week 5 in series 3. She went on to win.

I do sort of agree with you though. Series 3 was bored me, but then again this series doesn't.

I quite like the format but personally I'd make one change. I'd get rid of things like big band week or disco week, or whatever, and have more open themes, like movies, or whatever.

The genre specific themes are too restrictive for the type of act you get on X-Factor, as they tend to have limited ranges, and a limited niche, all of the acts this year suffer from that problem.

To be honest, I don't care if John and Edward can't sing a ballad, I don't want to see them do one, and I don't care if Lloyd can't sing a rock song, or if Danyl can't do impressions of a frog, or whatever, I'd just like to see them do a song that suits them each week.

Otherwise we end up with stuff like this, which no-one wants: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvUiFOdTpMw

I tend to agree with the above and additionally that would force the production team/SyCo to vastly expand the 'songbook' (and bloody well pay for more rights) so that we didn't keep getting the same ole same ole again and again.

And let the public choose the songs for the singers rather then some of the stupid song choices we've had this year

They could offer up some kind of online multiple choice option every Sunday for the following week... and allow one vote per person/account (FOR FREE)... it would make people feel more involved and the judges could quit the sniping over song choices.

Hmmmmmmmm, has potential. Although I suspect Simon would never allow that loss of control.

I agree OP. I don't mind tweaks (and some of the suggestions here sound great) but wholesales format changes aren't required. People who want to turn it into Idol should just go ahead and watch Idol. I'm quite happy with The X Factor just the way it is.

Point well taken. Just speaking as a man, I get a bit tired of ogling only blokes for most of an hour. Dannii and Cheryl help balance it out, but Cheryl has the annoying habit of speaking her mind—thereby shattering my fantasies that she has one.

To my mind it is too OTT as far as the production goes. So I would say:-

1. Get rid of the flashing lights - can't see the performers!
2. Insist that the audience tone down the screaming - can't hear the judges' comments.
3. Have an acoustic week where there are no dancers or dancing by the contestants.
4. Ditch the stupid announcements - or at least tone them down.

And most unlikely:-

5. Stop having mentoring - have the judges just commenting on all the contestants without having particular categories (like on Pop Idol/American Idol)
