The legacy of Big Brother

The Financial Times, of all papers, had an article last week showing how Big Brother had changed the face of television (on C4 more than most) and will continue to do so even though the current C4 top brass have seen fit not to renew the contract:

As its British pioneer, Peter Bazalgette, puts it in Prospect magazine this month, “it’s become one of the ways in which television is made”.

What stunned me until the phone votes scandal (on richard and judy) and other things..
C4 were getting 68 MILLION back from big brother a YEAR.

it was one of the reasons they didnt flinch at paying 180 million for the 3 year deal...

I often wonder. If the C4 board has decided to keep the preimum rate services.does anything really belive BB would be ending?
the red button would still be there urging you to vote..Texting still there and all the big brother Games.

Its been some years since that Scandal they are looking for money yet decided NOT to put back the services..

Its only when C4 see a summer without Big brother is the brick going to land through the window that im totally convinced about..I just hope another station changes its mind and realises there is still a home for Big brother.

The bloke who wrote that has his head so far up his ass he can smell his own poo.

The whole point of Big Brother it was claimed was it cut out the producer...but with no or very little live feed how is that possible?

Its legacy is that what people think is reality isn't, the housemates not only for the auditions but for their time in the house.

Now you have people in BB and other programmes not doing what's natural but what they feel is good for TV and future endorsements.

Even the audience of BBLB and BBBM are acting a role to gain attention rather than have a valid opinion.

Can't deny the influence of BB on TV or the media in general - the relationship built with the likes of Heat and the mainstream media from the Goodey phenomenon et all' the numerous reality tv shows all steal from BB - how many were there before BB? the weekly public votes - the spin off shows - the xtra factor and the strictly one (i forget its name) are direct rip offs of BBLB.

There are many other things that BB has inspired in broadcasting and its legacy is vast and will carry on long after BB itself ends.

One thing BB didnt introduce was judges shafting the audience to line their own pockets eh Mr Cowell?

But without BB there would be no X factor, its greatest legacy was proving that the public would stick with a show for months not just weeks and with the right selection process you could take a group of people off the street and turn them into overnight media sensations.

Who would be dissected endlessly in the press and.. on internet forums!

If BB cant find a new home it makes you wonder what will happen to all these Z listers that are with Agents (who got them a place in more recent BB's)

maybe they should all club together and create a BB tv station?? if Yvette fielding can fund one....

My personal rememberance of BB:

Peaked at Series 5 and went dowhill and nastier both in the house and unfortunately on this forum from Series 6 onwards is how I will remember the show

Social experiment to desperate search for fame

All walks of life were recruited the beginning and then you could only go in that house if

1. You have an agent or media connections or been on TV before

2. You have been in a test run already

3. You know the producers personally

Auditions seem irrelevant these days as they have more or less selected their line up already

I totally agree..BB5 was the GoldenAge.
and it became clear after that the more OTT the better they tried to create BB5 time and time again and failed.

I hope this rumour of endemol TV comes along we might just might get back to the days of Classic big brother.

Endemol/Brighter Pictures are the problem, they feel thay have to constantly tinker and create 'twists' for programmes they make.

Deal or No Deal is another example of that policy.
