The Stock, Aitken and Waterman thread.

I know people are going to have a good laugh but S.A.W were great back in the day.
The lyrics in some songs were pretty bad but they knew how to put together a HIT, make people dance and have a good time.
I only wish todays youngsters would have been alive to appreciate what music with a melody involved.

Now I wonder if anyone remembers these guys?
Despite the hideous vocals I do really like this song.

Yeah you could always tell a S.A.W track just by hearing it. Here's another (ahem) "classic"

Stock, Aitken and Waterman murdered the music scene in the 80's, they flooded the charts with their mindless drivel and sadly the gullible public bought that shit.

Then the Brit awards came along and three guesses who won most of the awards.

Stock, Aitken and Waterman should be shot for crimes against music.

I remember them - and those 80s jeans - and how Smash Hits would often quip the boys were more like "Big Bum"

Superstoked, you might want to take a peek here, if you aren't already an acolyte that is: http://www.hitfactoryforum.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl

Personally my favourite 'phase' of SAW tracks are those predating the 'Kylie' and beyond era; it seemed at that point like they hit a certain 'chart' formula and subsequently milked it to death, combined with an encroaching sound that was more house/funky than their previous Hi-NRG sound, and thus less 'pure'. I prefer the stuff like Hazell Dean's Whatever I Do, Divine's You Think You're A Man, Princess's I'll Keep On Loving You, The Banana's I Heard A Rumour, Carol Hitchcock's Get Ready, and Michael Davidson's Turn It Up (from the Who's That Girl soundtrack).

That's not to say there weren't still gems to be mined - I think Kylie's Got To Be Certain and Made In Heaven are slices of pop genius, and that Donna Summer's Another Time Another Place album is quite a beautiful thing which ranks amongst their best ever work.

Probably my favourite ever SAW track though is ironically one which never saw the light of day commercially, thanks to stupid legal wrangling which resulted in what I regard as a criminal omission:

And another 3 songs written and produced by SAW that I always loved, all sung by the same great artist:

And my favourite Bananarama SAW song (should have been a much bigger hit than it was!):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNDEMYiOFtQ

Plus a great song they wrote and produced for Mondo Kane (very different to anything they'd done before or after):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWGCZXGePTw

and a couple of fun ones they recorded themselves (they appear in both videos):

(Sinitta, Kylie & Jason make an appearance in this one!)

I played lot of their stuff during my years on the mobile disco scene their songs always filled floors it was SAW who launched Kylie they had loads of artists on their label!

SAW got slagged off a lot of the time but they found a niche in the market at the time on the subject of songs that filled dancefloors at the time along came " Jive Bunny! their songs got a lot of stick as well like SAW but again they scored a few hits!

PS my favourite SAW track " This time i know its for Real" by Donna Summer great track!

That could of been a quote from an x factor thread.

I rate S.A.W alot highly than that drivel.

Agreed. I'd take Rick Astley over any of those X Factor clowns anyday. At least SAW wrote some decent songs. 'Bad Boyz' lol my arse.

After Leona/BEP no.1 this week there's every chance the remaining six weeks of the year will be all X Factor. X Factor are way worse than SAW.

SAW's best period was when they were producing a newly sexed-up Kylie on 'Better The Devil You Know' & 'What Do I Have To Do and 'Shocked'. All corking tracks.

BTW, all traditional SAW tracks start with an instrumental run through of the song's chorus.

I (think) unless I'm mistaken, there is actually some sort of link between Cowell and SAW even back in the 80s

Cant remember what it was, either his first record label (that went bust) used to release some SAW artists or he was somehow involved in the production somewhere along the line

Not sure, maybe someone else knows. either way its all s**te

Woah! Never heard that Debbie Harry track before, its excellent thanks for the link, I really liked the SAW mix of In Love with Love aswell.

As far as the Cowell/SAW link goes, Cowell owned fanfare records whose main artist was Sinitta, although I am sure there was further involvement somewhere else too.

SAW helped Sinitta to get several hits on cowells fanfare label then they licensed Fanfare to bring out SAW album but the fanfare label( parent label run into trouble) and was taken over by BMG where Cowell started working there as an A&R man thats the connection something like that it was a while ago!

That reminds me of the Hitman and Her which was basically a promo for many a SAW track.

SAW represent my childhood. Those songs are always great to dance to at any night club, disco or party.

Earlier Kylie was brilliant, and when I was younger my favourite song by her was "Wouldn't Change A Thing" and "Never Too Late". Now, I love "What Do I Have To Do" and "Shocked".
