Why is ITV HD Sht ?

So BBC, Sky, SkySports, C4 and Eurosport all have HD and have HD content broadcast everyday..... Why is ITV not connecting with viewers and brining Sky viewers HD content ?

on the ITV HD channel there's only a couple of shows per week!!! what's the foookin point ? why not have Corrie and everyone's favourite shows on the HD service ? X factor ? pathetic

The BBC has the benefit of the licence fee to pay for HD.
The vast majority of home-made content on Sky, Eurosport and Channel 4's HD channels is upscaled, not HD. Channel Five has no HD whatsoever.

The license-fee isn't some bottomless pot of money the BBC can dip into to fund its services. They have to carefully decide how every penny should be spent, and have wisely decided to make shows in HD where the benefits of HD justify the additional cost. As a result, the BBC are producing a lot of good HD content for BBC HD channel.

ITV seem to be living in the past with no clear idea of how to proceed, which is why the ITV HD channel is a joke. As for other broadcasters, a lot is upscaled content but there is an increasing amount of true HD material from them. At least ITV's ad revenue is now increasing, so they might finally get their act together and broadcast a decent amount of real HD content if we're lucky (it's quite possible given some of their past decisions, that they'll decide not to bother with more HD, and just cut costs instead).

ITV have improved in recent weeks though. Just a couple of months ago you were lucky if more than 1 program a week was in HD. Now we have quite a bit. Nearly all new dramas coming out are in HD, most documentaries are now in HD, mosts films are in HD, sport in HD, The Bill in HD. Don't think any entertainment shows are yet in HD, but i'm sure we will be seeing X Factor, DOI etc in HD soon enough. Especially when ITV get their ITV1 HD channel and not just a red button service.

I agree there is so little content on ITV HD:

Quote:
Saturday 7th November
12.20pm FA Cup Live: Paulton Rovers v Norwich
4.05pm Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith

Sunday 8th November
1.15pm FA Cup Live: Northwich Victoria v Charlton
9pm Doc Martin
12.15am Champions League Weekly

Monday 9th November
9pm Collision

Tuesday 10th November
7.30pm Grimefighters
9pm Collision

Wednesday 11th November
9pm Collision

Thursday 12th November
7.30pm River Monsters
9pm Collision

Friday 13th November
9pm Collision
http://www.itv.com/channels/hd/weekl...e/default.htmlCertainlt they do show more movies in HD than say BBC HD, but little else.

There could be so much more, perhaps that'll change when many more people get HD boxes and when a HD channel on freeview looks imminent. Might take some time.

Not everyone has the billions the BBC has to throw at things!

I find programs on the West country feed just as good.
I mainly use this and did not even know Collision was in HD which I watched last night.

You might want to look at this post which is part of this thread.

It's a question of managing regional adverts and a national audience.

True but they were heavily restricted in what they could spend by the BBC Trust before they launched.

And the BBC have quite rightly taken the HD only view made the channel a mix of their own HD output.

Not sure that is entirely true on the channels that are simulcast's of SD channels there is quote a portion of Standard Def but there is a huge shift for home made programming to HD as for much the additional cost is marginal these days.

Yes a huge portions of five's output is created in HD they just don't have a channel to broadcast it on.

On ITV it amazes me how much they have lost the plot. There are now over 1.5 million HD users and they don't want to give them real access!

ITV HD can't launch as a channel on SkyHD because there are no EPG slots available, and can't offer the red button service on SkyHD because Sky's software won't allow it.

Except this week the vast majority of the content isn't movies - there's sport (both live and magazine formats), drama, and documentaries in HD.

One interesting comparison is to look at the number of hours of homegrown primetime programming which is available in HD across the terrestrial channels.

Code:
Channel Today Tomorrow Friday
BBC1 - 1.5hours None None
BBC2 - 1 hour 2.75hours None
ITV1 - 1 hour 1.5 hours 1 hour
C4 - 2 hours None 1 hour
Five - None None None
So over the remainder of this week, BBC2 does best, but only by 15 minutes more than ITV1, and BBC1 is lagging in fourth place.

FIVE used to be about films didn't it? It's changing for the better though; even if it becoming a more geeky Channel 4.

I'm not sure I truly believe that

If ITV HD wanted to have a linear channel Sky would find a way.

After all they changed the code in the HD boxes to allow manual access to red button streams. ITV were very hot under the collar when they found out about it.
