Britain's Really Disgusting Food

Anyone been watching this series on BBC3 ?

Very enjoyable and informative so far, quite a laugh in places and a bit of an eye opener.

Two programmes so far:

Meat:

Dairy:

yeah its great, i like alex, and the facts they come out with are eye-opening yet kinda depressing, like the irony of the rainforest alliance endorsing a product that is actually killing rainforests.

He should have gone a bit further with so-called sustainable Palm Tree oil, as a new bit of info reveals the following:

So you prefer the voluntarily ignorant, head in the sand approach? It's exactly that kind of attitude that the supermarkets love.

Instead, eat healthy food from known, high quality producers and you can eat until you burst. Just stop buying most of the poor quality supermarket muck. I do that and I eat just fine.

love Alex Riley, thought he was a wimp in front of Gordon though. Come on Alex!!!
Really enjoyed the programme last year too and it hasn't put me off hot dogs I'm ashamed to say. Although I did check yesterday at the amount of Chicken in a Kiev before I bought it!

He was probably worried that Gordo would thump him.

Still, interesting to see Gordo get out a few sentences without swearing, yet of course he was still his usual belligerent, aggressive self.

The 'reclaimed meat' used in cheap hot dogs and cheap processed meat was a bit of a shocker!
I had no idea about this process and will be very wary of hot dogs from now on.

I was very disappointed in the Co-Op's attitude, especially as they charge more for their milk than any other major supermarket.

I was disappointed with all of the companies represented, but not surprised. They were, as expected, evasive and obviously manipulative.

I know which is awful. He was very patronising and his usual bullying self. I wanted Alex to punch him one!

Alex is too smart to do that.

I'm guessing that these are repeats. I remember watching the one about sausages and pies a while back.
Creative marketing to say the least.

Nope, not repeats (easy to tell due to him showing a Summer 2009 Booker brochure in the Meat episode).

You're thinking of his first programme on generally disgusting food about a year ago, the precursor to this series.

I watched the first one last week and quite enjoyed it, but I couldn't help but get bored of yesterdays. It was full of him making mountains out of molehills and a pointless appearance by Heather Mills who claimed all sorts of crap about milk that blatently wasn't true.

These are not repeats. If you watched the 'meat' episode properly you would see that it is an 'update' and Alex makes several references to the first program.

I think it is a very entertaining approach to informing the 'great' British public about the crap they put inside themselves.
At least I have learnt to avoid American dairy products now.

I am glad I already decided to cut 3/4 of the crap I used to eat from my diet a coupe of years ago.
And I have been saying for years that the food industry and supermarkets are killing their customers - and they KNOW they are doing it.
Doesn't matter to them - it is a big enough and ever growing 'captive audience' and as long as they continue making these foods look attractive, charge less than for healthier options and fill the food with crap that 'improves' the taste they are going to keep winning.

I think the message Alex is trying to put across is that, ultimately, the ONLY way we can change it is to not buy this crap - EN MASSE. Without the market no companies can justify making and selling it.
I know it is just a dream though because way too many people in their 20s/30s are saying 'so what'... Not realising that they will suffer the consequences in their 40s/50s etc.

last week's was better, more factual. I felt this week's didn't deliver, far too much silliness to fill in for poor/inadequate research - although i'm glad he got in the trans fat article, that stuff is such bad news i'm amazed it's not been banned over here

better luck next time alex
and as for using heather mills as a point of reference, come on!
more scientific FACT please

the bit about breast milk was too silly for words

alex needs to make up his mind whether he's presenting this show as a comedian or someone who wants to get a point across
people aren't going to take him seriously when he takes a bottle of breast milk to a leading market retailer!

having said that, last week's episode was very illuminating; but this week, what happened to the 'dangerous margarines'? the 'uncreamiest trifles;'? were they edited out for some reason??
we watched all the show bar the last few minutes, did we miss something?

I am enjoying it at the moment. I like Alex, who presents it and it really opens your eyes about food.

Did we watch the same programme? Some of what she said was true, while some was questionable.

Judging by a couple of comments in this thread I sometimes wonder if people actually pay attention to what they are watching.

Yet I thought that this week's episode was better and more informative than the one on meat.

I guess it just goes to show that it depends on what you already know (or guessed at) beforehand.

she said she would sooner drink rat or dog milk than human as pus and other undesirables can be found in human milk but actually when this was put to a dairy farmer, he did state that the pasteurisation process did kill off any harmful bacteria
the pus is caused by mastitis which happens in cows that have been injected with the growth hormone to maximise their milk production; which is where the pus and blood comes in

so yes, some of us did pay attention

my point was that although alex does in most part present this really well, ie if it gets the message across then he's achieved whatever aims the programme has set out to achieve ie to allow us to make informed choices about what we consume...i do feel that last night's episode lacked a certain authority it perhaps possessed before, due to a higher ratio of larking about and comedy compared to actual fact; yes the facts were there but i felt a lot of the comedic instances were covering up a distinct lack of substance

for instance, wasn't the programme supposed to cover different types of margarine? dairy products? all we got was about the milk, the cheese, unarguably dairy products but i did think we were promised more

I thought that, watched the dairy one last night and there was something at the beginning about Sunflower Spread which I wanted to see about, but it was left out of the programme. Maybe it was edited out? Could have done with a little less about the milk and more about other dairy products

Some of us can only afford poor quality supermarket muck

If you go to farmers markets, small outlets that sell local produce, etc then not only will you find that the prices are cheaper than the supermarkets but you'll usually also get a better quality product.
