BBC Radio 2 Children In Need Auction

Terry Wogan kicks off his last ( I think? ) Auction of things money can't buy on Monday 16th Novemeber

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio2/shows/wa...ed-09-auction/

______________

I just wonder if Terrry will come back next year to host the weeks auction next year - or will Chris takes the key to the auction box? It's like when Chris Tarrant left Capital he was always the main person to front Help a London Child.

Music Marathon is on Friday 20th November before the TV show starts at 7pm.

CIN is for a very good cause but I get sick of hearing Terry Wogan bleating on about it!

What time does the Music Marathon commence?

Excellent news, 5 days of listening to people bidding more money than I earn in a year for a round of golf . Just as well it all goes to a good cause.

I can see Chris Evans Taking over in a couple of years, although terry was quoted the other day, that he would present children in need untill hell freezes over.

This got me thinking - are radio station auctions a little old fashioned now? Not just Radio 2... a lot of local stations used to do annual charity auctions and they raised a fair bit of cash. But these says there's a feeling that (a) they don't make very good radio and (b) people who want to give will do so, auction or not.

Any thoughts/memories of auctions from years gone by?

Whilst I agree with the sentiments of CIN it does make for bloody appalling radio and it's the only time of the year that Wogan gets switched off.

Me too! I object to my licence fee paying for that...I expect TW's prog to entertain...not keep tel;ing me about CIN!

And they remove a whole night's programmes for that show with second and third rate performers....sheesh!

That's kinda my thinking - the CiN telethon has really had its day. It was OK back when we had lots of variety shows on a weekend, but these days it's a bit old hat.

What about radio stations doing auctions on air?

if wogan says his normal line for his auction "things that money cant buy i will throw the radio out. of cos you need money how else do you stand a chance of winning it if you put a lowly pound in? i know its for a good cause, but for heavens sake why cant he just say only wealthy people can win this lovely trip to go to the races with sara kennedy.or have a smaller one with a limit we poorer people can hope to win, such as cup of tea with sara kennedy.know there would be a stampede for that lol

As I said last year, the abysmal, amateurish BBC Scotland coverage is so embarrassing that we don't even put BBC1 on during the evening of CIN.

"We" are promised "BIG" celebrities and tune in for them and guess what? Scotland gets transferred over to some disorganised rubbish from some backwater in the Highlands with "presenters" that you don't normally see on the telly - and that's why!

Agree, I don't think of it as the auction for things that money won't buy, more the auction for people with more money than sense, who want to show people just how much money they have.

How I agree. When I used to listen to Wogan I found the auction very uncomfortable listening. Sure these people where giving to charity, but to do it in such a public and ostentatious way?

The "things money cannot buy" really winds me up. I wish I had excess funds I could blow just like that. Instead, I have to make do living in my overdraft.

I HATE CIN! Why should my licence fee go to support a charity I have no intention of donating to?
After ten months of Wogan on the radioi talking about CIN, we then lose our normal Friday Progs so that third rate Celebs can make an ar*e of themselves and demand money from us!
They say no one is paid...but what about the cost of BBC resources? So I'm obliged to donate a portion of my licence fee to a charity I don't support?

Then get a second job rather than spending all your spare time online complaining about Sarah Kennedy.

There is always an auction that involves Terry Wogan getting a free meal at some top restaurant - what day is it this year or has it already gone?
I always wish someone would bid 5 million quid if Terry takes his wig off live on CiN night - Ive been waiting for this live bid for years. Surely we can all club together 8p, or whatever, for everyone in the country?

I don't begrudge them having their annual "let's slap each other on the back and tell the world what jolly decent chaps we are-athon" each year but the entire Wogan show is full of it for weeks before and all the shows are at it on CIN week. Little wonder Steve Wright chose this week for his 32th holiday of the year.

To be honest, this is the time of year I turn off Radio 2 until december 27th. No sooner will CIN be over then the Xmas crap will start. Thank god for iPods!

Yes, I think they just alienate most of the audience for a week. Most listeners will see these items out of they're grasp, and perhaps donate a couple of quid into a tin.

How else could it work? I think they should try the UK Radio Aid method - prizes that money can't buy, one per hour, text to win at £1.50 per text. Everyone can take part if they want, do their bit perhaps with a text or two - result: loads of money raised, £3 million wasn't in 12 hours?
