you do realise kitchen porter means washing pots and cleaning up after the other staff right?

Shit job.

but it's a job; and Wetherspoons are an excellent employer and will always give staff at any level the opportunity to move into more significant roles if a) the person wants to, and of course b) they have treated their current role with respect - doing a good job and being punctual - however menial.

Of course a lot don't and Wetherspoons know that as well as any employer in the hospitality industry; but not many companies will give the same scope to move up the ranks as 'spoons.

And they do an awesome Chicken Vindaloo too

I have a friend who has worked in wetherspoons for years.

they even nuke the burgers.

they dont actually make anything.

I have also heard they are not that great an employer either.

Do you work for them by any chance?

A job is a job at the end of the day, Wetherspoons are said to be very good employers with plenty of opportunitys for career progression. At least Coolies is going for a job unlike some people who just sit on the arses all day and sponge off the state.

Good luck, hope you get the job. Don't know what they will ask you but first impressions count, so give good eye contact, look smart and smile.

Just go in with a good positive attitude. Prove you are a hard worker and well organised. I've done Kitchen Porter jobs before and it has been a good laugh if you have a good kitchen crew. The important things about the job is cleanliness, organisation, work well under pressure, willing to help out in other areas of the business if needed, flexibility.

You sound like you are preparing well for the job. Don't be nervous (easier to say than do, I know).

Don't think of it as a sh1t job, you never know where a job can lead to!!!

Good luck!

I'd agree with this. They were certainly like this when I worked for them ten years ago. They were very willing to promote from within the pub rather than advertise for supervisors, managers etc.

OP: Emphasise that you are a hard-worker, honest, easy-going, flexible and punctual.

They don't want any more than that.

Everything you need to do in the job you'll be trained for.

Good luck!

It is all nuked. Apart from the chips and fried chicken though. They have big fryers for that.

I worked with them for around a year and it was a pretty shit job to be honest, but it was a job and I got paid. I made good friends too.

Its so much better than sitting about waiting for an opportunity that is never going to come.

Fair play to the OP! We all have to start somewhere and Wetherspoons is as good a place as any.

Don't worry, they tend to only employ people who have been rejected by McDonalds. If you are above that standard you will soon become a manager!

It also helps if you can learn to ignore customers and be a jobs-worth.

a jobs a job, i would be happy for my son to have that job however cruddy

I worked in a restaurant for 2 years a while back and it was loads of fun, making deserts, carrying food to customers, helping with the washing up, preparing for parties and special occasions was the best (haloween, xmas, new year) not to mention i made friends with all the staff and chefs there and had a great time. I'd rather be there doing that than sat at home doing bugger all, all day

Whoah! A lot of unwarranted bitterness there.

They employ people of all walks of life with all sorts of qualifications.

Maybe you are ignored because you're flashing your twenty like the plebs have never seen one before.

Maybe they're being jobsworths because they deal with tits all day every day, and they have a job to do and they're trying to do it well.

Regardless of your silly misconceptions, its an honest, legal job and I wish OP well in his interview. He could do a lot worse.

That just about sums up the typical Wetherspoon employees attitude to customers.

Just read any of the beer related newsgroups and forums and you will find that my experience of a typical Wetherspoon pub is not uncommon. The fact that the _same_ complaints are expressed about JDW pubs throughout the country tends to suggest that the problems stems from the lack of effective management.

Wetherspoon may be great company to work for but as a customer experience it often leaves a lot to be desired.

I don't think it's a particularly good company to work for.

I take exception to your snobby assertion that all employees are McDonalds rejects.

Well what do you expect for £1.99 for a main meal?

To the OP - good luck with the interview and just be yourself and think for a few seconds before answering the questions.

Am sure you will be fine - and if you are not sure about what the job will involve ask them. Have a look on wikipedia to find out a bit more about the company too - that may look good.

Hope all goes well!

This is what Morrissey might say to you...

And heaven knows I'm miserable now'

Good luck with the job interview. Don't worry about experience, all they are looking for is someone who they can depend on to turn up when expected and work hard when they get there.

If you can convince them of that you should be OK. Keep emphasising that reliability and punctuality are important to you.

As you say, a job is a job and as my Grandad always said, there is art in any task and doing a lousy job well is better than doing a good job badly.
