Undercooked Sausages? :s
Im a uni student and so Im just starting to cook myself. Anyway today i attempted to make sausages and have eaten them but am concerned they were undercooked.
I stuck them in the grill for like ten minutes but they werent very warm so bunged for the overn on 220C for 15 minutes as well. I ate them and they were warm and the skins had burst and the moisture had leaked out - does that mean theyre cooked if theyve become all wet. Im just a bit worried because they seemed a bit soft when I was cutting them

25 minutes total cooking time is sufficient for sausages. For future reference grill them on a medium heat and turn occasionally so you don't overcook one side. The fats drain away with grilling and makes for a healthier sausage, if there's such a thing.

Well you don't want it too high else they will burn on the outside and might not cook properly inside, medium grill is usually for sausages. The cooking instructions fpr any packet foods should either be on the outside or inside of packet/label, just follow those and add a few minutes if you want to be on the safe side.

Someone of your age should be out there buying fish and chips, kebabs, or cooking baked beans on toast, and other standard student stuff. I didn't move on to sausages at college until I'd mastered fish fingers

When i cook sausages, I always cut them lengthways into two, they cook faster and thoroughly!

The best student meal ever, I lived on this when I was away at uni - cook pasta plain, drain it, add a tin of tuna, mix it in, stick it on a plate, top with grated cheese, and pour a can of beans over the top. Filling, tasty, quite cheap and has most of the food groups in there!

Sausages are best fried in a little oil on a very low heat for about 20 minutes or until dark brown all over.
Some sausages are still a bit pink when you cut them open even after cooking. |

Give them a few minutes in a microwave to drive off the fat then grill or roast.

Basically, if the sausage is still pink in the middle it is not cooked.
If you have cooked them on too high a heat and they are browned on the outside but still pink in the middle, cut them lengthways down the middle and grill the insides to cook through. As said above, cook them on a medium grill for about 20 minutes turning regularly and they should be fine. Sauasages are great to use as a filler for pasta sauces or quick curries. Grill your sausages then cut into pieces, fry an onion in a pan with a spoonfull of curry paste, chuck in the sausages and a tin of beans and Bob's yer uncle. If you have a spud about chop it into 1cm cubes, microwave for 6 minutes with a bit of water in the dish and chuck that in too. For pasta grill and slice the sausages, fry the onion, chuck in a tin of tomatoes and the bangers with a shake of mixed herbs and you're away! |
