The only tip I can really offer is to not be bothered which NY airport you fly into. Although Newark is technically New Jersey its actually just as easy to get to Manhattan as from JFK. The other way to save money of course will be getting a non-direct flight- KLM quite often have good deals for example.

When were you thinking of going?

If you're planning on shopping, look closely at your baggage allowance.

We're currently looking for flights for next summer. Although flybmi seems to be the cheapest flights on the surface, the baggage allowance is a lot lower that other carriers, so if we do our normal shopping, we'd end up stung for excess baggage. We'll probably go for Delta again. Costs a little more, but the service has been good the last two years, and the luggage allowance suits us.

I flew with air france, and they said I was allowed two pieces of luggage weighing 50lb each (Which I worked out to be about 22 kilos).
I would also suggest looking at indirect flights as there are many more options that way - I flew from Birmingham to Paris (An hours flight), then had I think a 7 hour flight from Paris to NY.

Do a search on expedia for your preferred dates then book directly on that airlines website.

In January KLM seem cheapest - if you don't mind a slightly longer journey but less stress and you live in London you can also fly from City airport to NYC via Amsterdam.

Check in takes 5 mins and you only need to check in 30 mins before the flight. Then you can be on the plane 10 mins later. So much better than nightmare Heathrow or Gatwick - the longer flight may be worth it to save 3 hours checking in and going through security/waiting for luggage.
