Rihanna awarded women of the year award

Rihanna received her award just days after she broke her silence over her assault on U.S. TV show Good Morning America. Obviously feeling nervous on stage, Rihanna said: 'I am shaking right now. I am so nervous. But I am overwhelmed and honoured over this honour.'

Rihanna paid tribute to fellow award winner Maya Angelou, who had given an inspirational speech earlier that evening, but admitted the Color Purple writer had made her own speech 'even more difficult'.

Speaking on the red carpet before her on-stage appearance, Rihanna said she felt relieved after discussing her abuse on TV last week.
She said: 'It was like a weight lifted off my chest and now I don't have to talk about it anymore. I can talk about my music, things that I love.'

They're both black, close enough for the Daily Mail.

LOL. I shouldn't laugh but there's too much truth in that.

Ridiculous, not to mention insulting to those with genuine achievements.

Complete laziness from The Daily Mail. All they had to do was place a search on amazon to look it up. I got the right name straight away.

Okay, she might very well not be a true woman of the year, but please don't indicate that being beat up isn't THAT bad. Being beat up by your boyfriend, is I imagine, a very traumatic experience.

They give it to women who have been through a lot.
I think Kylie won it a couple of years ago.

Get beaten up by your boyfriend and receive an award? I'm really not sure what sort of message that sends out! If she'd done charity work for a couple of years to raise awareness for domestic abuse, I could understand. But she's not really done anything apart from give one interview about it, as far as I know?

That's hardly the point, is it? I've been bullied, so should I get an award for that?

Is this not glamourising domestic violence in a weird way? Get a black eye, win an award.

It does send out an odd message. Get hit by your boyfriend, go back out with him, dump him due to the bad publicity you get from it then go on tv and talk about it. Voila you're top woman of the year.

Bizarre

It is a strange choice.....I very much doubt she would have even been considered had it not been for the nasty incident involving her crazy ex.

Agreed, i find this uncomfortable that an award was given, just because she suffered domestic abuse.
