This 3D week is going to be crap isn't it?

Out of interest, I picked up a pair of he free glasses from Sainsburys today and then re-watched the 3D Derren Brown trailer. It just makes things look red and blurry and gives you very sore eyes! Can't see this being any good!

Crap, or just a bit of fun...yes.

Remember though, the 3D that you will see during Channel 4's 3D week is nowhere near as good as the type of polarised 3D that you can currently see in the Cinema or the the type that you can watch on 3D ready Tvs/monitors with shutter glasses. That type of 3D looks almost perfect quality...full colour, natural brightness, sharp images and no eyestrain.

I have to keep repeating this just in case people think that Channel 4's 3D week is representative of the best 3D quality available....it isn't...it's just a bit of cheap fun.

Exactly!!!
This gimmick by c4 is doing 3d's image no good at all.

for the last 40/50 years 3d has been a cheap gimmick, it gave you headaches, the picture was shocking, the colours were screwed, it was just hideous.

Now we have all new technology being promoted in the cinemas, £££MILLIONS have been invested in cameras, editing and projection eqiuptment, all the big directors are filming in 3d as it is beleived to be the future in film.

So, folk eager for a glimpse of this "new" technology will no doubt tune in to see if it is actually any better, as soon as they see it, they wil make their mind up that it is just as bad as the old technology.

No, but I can imagine families sitting round the tv every evening wearing some kind of glasses. For glasses wearers, polarising clipons will be available... as will "cool-looking" specs.

Just because YOU won't, doesn't mean other's won't.

That makes me literally think of Derren Brown controlling the Nation in a Doctor Who way!

Not to mention the new TV's on the way that don't need the viewer to wear glasses at all.
These TV's have 3d screens.

Well not having seem the non-specs screens, I've yet to be convinced that autostereoscopy is an effective and viable technology for the home TV.

It's a gimmick. But I think it's good they're filming a lot of stuff now stuff in 3D as in few years time screens will be able show it properly without the silly colour filters.

Exactly. My family enjoy it at the cinema and would love to see the movie the same way at home. I don't expect the news or Eastenders to be in 3D but I enjoy movies!

You can....the cinema uses Polarised lens and 3D afficionados watch 3D stuff using unfiltered shutter glasses.
Apart from some slight loss in brigthness (easily compensated by turning the brightness up on the display) the 3D image is full colour and looks awesome.

If you can't see the way that a 3D image expands the whole screen and takes you into the "space" of the action, then no-one can explain it to you. I guess this illusion of depth and space is less important to some people than others.
When I watch a movie I like to be drawn in and escape into the world that is being shown....3D does that much more powerfully than 2D for me personally.

Hear, hear!!
I have several stereoscopic movies that I watch in true 3D on my home projector using shutter glasses and I enjoy them much more than any other films....even though some of the 3D films up to now haven't been that great, I admit, the 3D element really improves them ten-fold.

I can't wait for more 3D films to be released in the future when a 3D standard is created for BluRay and DVD players hopefully next year. No more red and blue headache inducing specs....only full colour and great looking 3D

Sky are supposedly launching a proper 3D channel sometime next year. It will probably require a TV upgrade to view it though.
This Channel 4 3D is a bit of fun using cheap ColorCode glasses...not true 3D like you see in the cinema.

I live nowhere near a Sainsbury's (or ever been to one), so it's pretty difficult to get hold of the 3D glasses. Channel 4 should have included other outlets with a broader range in the UK. Eg. McDonalds, Tesco, Asda etc. Or even made them available from their website.

I think they'll be losing viewers, rather than gaining any. Nobody is going to watch the programmes in double vision.

Nice idea. Must try harder.

This is not a gimmick the colour code system is excellent it gives 3D in full colour , unlike the 1950s version

colour code opens the door to 3D photography and Video
you can buy the software and do your own stuff

as for television it is a huge improvement over flat TV we have had the capability of 3D TV since 1928 Baird Mechanical system and 1946 Baird all electronic Telechrome 3D no specs.

broadcasting in colour code opens the door for 3D for every one with out the need for buying a new television

the ultimate future is 3D with out glasses I have seen a demonstration of a Lens in front of a TV the same size as the screen which gives a 3D effect with out the need of specs , there is a version of this for the PSP as well.

you can watch the program with out specs as normal and with this system you do not get double vision
do a google for colour code and you can find out about it

Colourcode is very blurry when you watch it without glasses - virtually unwatchable for me.

E.g. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1BqMKUu1-k

The channel 4 glasses work on quite a few of the youtube 3d videos as well by the way. That video above of the snake seems quite impressive to me. Yes, the quality isn't cinema quality but you can clearly see the snake coming off the screen towards you.

The 1950s classic 3D movies were mostly made using the Polaroid process so their colour was ok, although many of them were made in black and white.
The red/green glasses which are often associated with them were normally used with later b & w re-releases in the red/green anaglyph format.
Polaroid prints of the 50s b & w classics are very few and far between, if indeed they still exist at all.

99p for 2 pairs isn't bad (even though you may be a bit bitter as they got them for free!).

Yeah, I checked Ebay the other day and spotted a few pairs knocking round. 'Freebie' stuff getting sold on Ebay happens all the time. I think Channel 4 for may have missed a trick by not selling them for a small charge from their site...

I'm not a big fan of anaglyph or ColorCode (I use shutters) but I have to say that the Derren Brown promo looked pretty good. The fact that we'll be able to watch these on the HD channels adds to the quality too.
The only problem though is that the promo only lasts 30 seconds and long term viewing with these glasses is 100% guaranteed to result in eyestrain. In the past, I have only been able to use this type of glasses in 10-20 minute stints before I get bloodshot eyes.
