At a guess the Water virus is a defence mechanism the Ice Warriors put in place to stop other people colonising Mars while they are in hibernation (or off on holiday somewhere).

Earth in 2006 know of the Ice Warriors (as seen in The Christmas Invasion) so I'm guessing that before BB1 was built it was established that the Ice Warriors were seemingly not around.

I'd say 1 in 3. Or, at least:

spoiler:
he is infected; possibly doesn't manage a full-on transformation

Pure speculation, of course, mostly from the point of view that RTD likes two parters with a lead in and he's already done character predicting the end of the Doctor about 10,000 times.

I think the Ice Warriors probably left Mars long before 2059. In their first story they come from a ship discovered on 20th Century Earth that had crashed thousands of years before. I don't think they have ever been encountered on Mars itself.

That story was set in the future (3000AD according to the Radio Times but no actual date was given in the show).

The Seeds of Death (where the Ice Warriors attack Earth) was set pretty much the same time as Waters of Mars is (mid - late 21st Century).

The two Peledon stories are set in the future (long after Humans have got Intersteller travel) yet the Ice warriors are still classed as being from Mars.

Then as mentioned earlier according to the Christmas Invasion UNIT have encounted Ice Warriors (so probably another Invasion atempt sometime between the 1960's and 2006. In Castrovalva the 5th Doctor talks as if the Brigadier had encountered them).

So evidence suggests the Ice Warriors are an active force before, during and after 2059 and are still classed as Martians centuries later.

Of course all there encounters/mentions (except the Christmas Invasion one) may have been altered due to the Time War and the mention in WoM may be basically that their civilization was wiped out due to the war.

The chances of anything coming from Mars are a 1,000,000 to 1, they say.

I've always taken that to mean UNIT know of them because of the Doctor's encounters with them rather than UNIT actually meeting them.

Wouldn't it be great if the cause of the Earth attack in The Seeds of Death was the events of TWOM?

It could be that UNIT are just going from 2nd hand accounts from the Doctor (or indeed Jo Grant or Sarah Jane Smith) but there is a book that has an Ice Warrior attack in the 1990's that UNIT have to deal with so the hint in TCI may have been to that.

The Seeds of Death happens sometime after 2070 so it is entirely possible that the attack on Earth is due to the building of Bowie Base One.

A book! I'm pretty much a TV only Whovian. If it aint happened on screen then it aint happened in the Whoniverse. Limited I know, but it just makes life easier.

What about those other Martians... [EdBishopVoice on] the Mysterons, sworn enemies of Earth.... [EdBishopVoice off] did they see off the Ice Warriors?
