Should I go into work?
Currently living with my mum & she has suspected swine flu. Yesterday I felt so ill. Was really weak & shaky & kept getting chills. But today I only have a sore throat & slightly runny nose, not sure whether to go into work or not - we don't get sick pay.

I felt exactly the same as you on Monday and today I have a sore throat (my voice is going too)and bunged up nose. Unfortunately I am the only person who knows how to run payroll and if I had taken today off there would be some very unhappy people in the office.......

How come you don't get sick pay - is it part-time, casual or voluntary work?
It depends how bad you need the money, but you could always go in and tell them you've not been feeling great and that you might take the afternoon off... (that way you'll still get paid for some of it at least) |

Unfortunately with regards to sick leave you're damned if you take it and damned if you don't. I once went into work with a streaming cold, as I never like taking sick days. The whole day I was moaned at 'oh thanks for spreading your germs etc etc'.
Then when i got a bad dose of flu and as off over 7days, I had to have a return to work lecture on sickness!!!!!! In my last job you were allowed only 30days sick over 3yrs!!!...anymore and you were put on a report.

Hmmm....in that case I'd say you had a duty of care towards the people you are caring for. If I were you I'd speak to your manager or whoever is in charge and express your concerns, especially tell them abut your mum, I think they would not expect you to go in today, but to see if your condition worsens tomorrow. Maybe call your local surgery and speak with a Dr/Nurse. Thats my personal advce anyway.
Good luck and hope you and your mum feel better soon.

I actually had about 10 days off last year - over two separate periods as I had two very bad chest infections. Prior to that, the last time I had off sick was about 18 years ago when I had chicken pox. I don't think 30 days is particularly excessive if a person has health issues - but an averagely fit and healthy person should not need to take 10 days off sick every year. |

Hi Di Hi,
It strikes me that you are the kind of person who takes time off sick if you even do so much as sneeze - leaving colleagues to cover your work and responsibilities! 10 days sick leave is more than sufficient for a year at work for the average person. Are you really the best person to advise someone over whether or not to go to work? I think not. |

I guess (even without thinking about pigs and their germs) that it is cold season now so you kind of expect that. That said, I am at home waiting for VM to come out - pfft. I can't really even have music on loud because then I won't hear the door. I hate waiting. |

A lot of organisations now use the Bradford method for employees being absent - they set a limit and anyone over that limit will 'get a talking to'. It does seem to make sense, as people that have a lot of 1 or 2 days 'sick' are seen as worse 'offenders' that take off a bank of 5 days for example.
http://www.e-days.co.uk/bradford_factor.asp My company will give employees a 'back to work' interview after every period of absence, whether that be 1 day or 10. |
