Olly - Sounds like Will Young

I was listening to mp3's of the performers this morning and was struck by how alike Olly sounds to Will Young - in certain performances (Come Together springs to mind) it could actually have been Will singing.

With this in mind, I can absolutely see Olly winning - and also going on to be a success. Anyone else agree?

I don't think Olly sounds anything like Will.

I agree he sounds like Will Young, but I don't like WY's voice (although I do like him as a person), so I don't see that as a good thing.

I can agree with that - but on the other hand, I feel that Olly's voice has a bit more 'oomph' to it.

Olly sounds nothing like Will Young. For god's sake. What a ridiculous thing to say. I much prefer Olly to Will Young who I have never liked.

That is an insult, Olly's voice isn't distinctive nor very good, just average in my opinion.

I wrote this in a thread once and got lambasted for it. I'll stick up for you though because I do honestly hear WY occasionally in Olly's performances.

Doesn't sound like him that much, but there are definite similarities...which is probably why I took to Olly straight away. I love Will.

Woah, defensive...

Interesting that you think it is a 'ridiculous' thing to say. I did a little test over my lunchbreak at work. Asked a few co-workers what they thought of an mp3 of Olly performing 'Come Together'. Didn't tell them who it was (not many people here watch X-Factor). 5 of the 7 people asked, with no prompting from me, "Is this Will Young's new single?".

That, my friends, is what's known as a blind test, and it's the best way to measure a hypotheses like this. Not such a ridiculous thing to say, after all.

Weird, I've thought for the last three weeks that Olly reminds me of Will. He's got that same sort of ease on stage and likeability factor. his voice isn't as good, but at Pop Idol stage it's very similar to that of Will at that time, obviously he's improved as his career has progressed
Now Lucy's gone he's the only one I'd like to see win.

What a rude post!

Its not a ridiculous thing to say at all, its called having an opinion to which the OP is entitled. No need to shoot them down in flames so rudely because you do not agree with them

I happen to agree. Ive been telling my family how much I think Olly sounds like Will Young for weeks. Will is incrediably talentled and throughly deserved his Pop Idol win. Though I dont expect you to agree with me...

Olly's voice also reminds me of Will's.
I also find that Olly sounds better with the audio only, as the visuals are a distraction, and he has a very nice tone with some oompth as someone said, may be more than Will.
I have download all of Spiidey's mp3s, and it's Olly that I enjoy listening to the most overall.

I haven't heard the mp3 but in terms of live singing on t'telly, I can't find any similarity at all. Will has a far more soul-type voice and what's known (and disliked) in the US as a goat vibrato, which Olly doesn't.

Their ease on stage is very similar, but that's where it ends for me.

I thought that when I first heard Olly singing Very Superstitious. He definitely has a similar quality in his voice. The two voices aren't identical but I do think there is a similarity.

I would love to know what WY thinks of the comparisons.

There are similarities, but there are differences too. I like both.

But Olly does have the goat vibrato. That's why he sounds like Will Young and why I don't like either of their voices.

I've said this all over the place. It's especially evident in the videos where he sings with Jamie. I'll find them.

Weird, because he doesn't sound that goaty to me at all. Perhaps it's just far more obvious in the way Will sings.

I'm not particularly keen on Olly (like him well enough, but he's 4th in a list of 6 for me), but I'm a Will fan, and have seen him live.

ETA: that should read 'list of 7' not 6. Forgot Stacy.

Sounds as though they're bleating. Have a listen again to your mp3.

Hmm, I can sort of see why it's got that description, although I think with both singers it's more down to the nasal tone of their voice rather than a problem inherent in the vibrato.
