Noisy Sky+ Box After Upgrade

Does anyone have any suggestions as to why the fan is now constantly on my Sky + box ? I have upgraded to a WD 320GB AAJB HDD, and the installation went fine, and the capacity is great, however the fan is just on all the time, to the point where I am considering going back to the original HDD.

Does anybody recommend an alternative drive instead, or is there something simpler that I could do ?

Thanks in advance

What make is your box? (check here)

Certain boxes just don't like certain drives. Amstrad DRX280s for example, don't seem to like Western Digital drives. Best to stick as closely as possible to the original drives. (ie Seagate in Amstrad).

I've never read of any other solution to this.

I had exactly the same problem when I upgraded the HDD in my DRX180, so after researching the subject on here I disconnected the fan. The unit doesn't run hot (it's not even warm) and is well ventilated. I gather that the box 'sees' the increased disk capacity and activates the fan accordingly, rather than it being thermally triggered.

Can you remember where the thread was about disconnecting the fan ?

Or is it as simple as disconnecting and leaving some cable out, within the box ?

cheers

[Sorry, just got notification of your reply.]

Best to look for a Seagate CE drive. The original would probably have been a ST3160022ACE. I've also used a ST3160215ACE (both 160GB).
