CH4 "3D Week" - A Marketing Ploy?

For the upcoming 3D film "Avatar" that is.

CH4 have history, they went ape over the "Night at the Museum 2" film with endless plugs and endless showings of the first film just prior to the sequels release.

The 3D programmes on offer for 3D week are so few and so dire that it looks cheaply cobbled together.

I am half expecting many promotions of Avatar during this, so-called, 3d week across all channel4 programmes.

Avatar hardly needs help in promoting itself...ha ha

More likely it's a promotion for 3D itself as it's obvious that there is a resurgence of interest in it...both in the Cinema and on the Net. This time, it might finally come of age....although Channel 4's 3D week is hardly state of the art 3D technology is it? ColorCode is just the old anaglyph method which has failed on several occasions before.

Roll on 2010 and the appearance of more true stereoscopic content along with 3D displays capable of showing full colour, full brightness 3D that inspires "oohs" and "aahs".

Avatar isn't the only film in 3D you know.

colour code is not the same old anaglyph method unlike the original system this is in colour and I was quite impressed with the chuck program which used the same system if more programs using this system would alow 3D with out the need to spend £100s on a new TV

Yes it is. ColorCode still uses filters and therefore has colour degradation and causes other problems like eyestrain. I agree that ColorCode does have slightly better colours than the red/blue 3D but it's harder on the eyes too...especially if you are right eye dominant.

Quote:
Anaglyph definition : a stereoscopic motion or still picture in which the right component of a composite image usually red in color is superposed on the left component in a contrasting color to produce a three-dimensional effect when viewed through correspondingly colored filters in the form of spectacles

My advice is watch some true stereoscopic 3D in side by side format. Each eye receives a perfect quality left and right image and when viewed using shutter glasses (or polarised) the results are amazing. The colours are natural, there's only a slight loss in brightness and you feel like you are watching a 2D quality film, only it's in 3D. The polarised 3D in the Cinema is a good example of non-anaglyph 3D.

Half expected a 3D week or night on the back of this film and am looking forward to the add's just as much as i am to the film, pity about the output although they have scored with the queen's coronation in 3D,going to try get some glasses today if i'm lucky, hope so.

Pity CH4 couldn't have shown some more up to date film's as they a hundred's,not sure the more modern 3D film's use the kind CH4 are using though, haven't seen 3D t.v. in years, should be fun.

There have been a lot of 3D movies recently, so it's a current thing of the moment, not a specific movie, so to me it doesn't come over as a marketing ploy.

Got my glasses from sainsburys, they're not the usual kind, so will take a look at one or two things next week, but no amount of persuasion will get me watching derren brown!

The Thing is the films they are showing werent originally in Colorcode as It is a relatively new version of the Anaglyph format, but any film filmed in 3D can be converted over to Colorcode obviously there is a cost involved to doing it

It is more likely to put people off if they think colorcode is the best cinema can do. Which it sure isn't.

Totally agreed!!

Who thinks that Channel 4 should put a disclaimer throughout this 3D week? Something along the lines of...

"While quality is of prime importance to us, in no way do we declare that the 3D broadcasts represent the current state of 3D technology, which is far superior"

Perhaps they are just screen capturing a ColorCode outputted version in Stereoscopic Player....hardly any cost at all.

My example...Friday the 13th 3D ColorCode clip

Fair comments on the likelyhood of this being a marketing thing, if it was it would be very misjudged!

I have tested the ColorCode specs on this website:

http://www.colorcode3d.com/gallery/

And the still images look quite good with good colour, but still quite dim.

If you go to the Cinema and watch the 3D there, it's far superior.
