Sting - "The X Factor is a preposterous show"

I don't usually post about the X Factor, but I thought Sting was spot on in a recent interview ..

Quote:
"The X Factor is a preposterous show and you have judges who have no recognisable talent apart from self-promotion, advising them what to wear and how to look. It is appalling. The real shop floor for musical talent is pubs and clubs, that is where the original work is. But they are being closed down on a daily basis. It is impossible to put an act on in a pub. The music industry has been hugely important to England, bringing in millions. If anyone thinks the X Factor is going to do that, they are wrong."

Well it IS a preposterous show. But don't we already know that?

And Sting is pretty preposterous, as preposterous things go. More preposterous than the X-Factor. Preposterously hypocritical.

(Think I've used up my 'preposterous' quota for the day.)

I'm surprised he could actually get his head out of his arse for long enough to watch X Factor tbh.

Agreed - and I actually do agree with him on this point...

Exactly what I was thinking - hark at him with his tantric sex and lute music.

To say nothing of his wife expecting a seven months pregnant cook work 14 hours a day. I'd call that pretty preposterous actually!

The X Factor fans are here to save the day.

You may not like Sting on a personal level but he has made some classics in his time, oh and has notched up 11 grammys. Simon Cowell, on the other hand, gave us Robson & Jerome.

Of the two - the X-Factor and Sting - they are both preposterous but in different ways. I personally prefer the cynical and hypocritical preposterousness of the X-Factor than the cynical and hypocritical preposterousness of Sting.

But I do love Englishman in New York so he's not completely preposterous all the time.

Love Sting, but can't take him too seriously right now with the whole, beard, cardie, pipe and slippers look he's got going on.

Can't stand the bloke but he's got a very good point on this one. Leona Lewis covering Snow Patrol is not going to be one of those recordings that defined a year let alone inspired a generation. While Sting can't claim this either I'll wager most people could name one of his songs even if they thought he was prepostorous

I hate to agree with him but I do.

That's one of the reasons Leon couldn't hack it. Singers work there arse off to get to the top, by the time they get there they are seasoned performers and are strong enough to cope. They dont go home crying to their mums at the first "sore throat".

One redeeming feature doth not all others supplant .....

(and I never liked anything he did after Roxanne, anyway ..... )

Whatever people think of his solo career, this isn't true. Sting was in The Police, a band who came up the hard way, playing the pubs and clubs in the way Sting mentions, and became one of the biggest and most influential bands of their time. So if only for his work in The Police, Sting can claim to have inspired a generation and has achieved a hell of a lot more than anyone on The X Factor ever will.

Not that i like Sting, but he has made a good point. Most bands of that era and before, slogged their way to the top by playing pubs and clubs and earning their reputation and fame. Nowadays its all down to the reality tv route, and regardless of wether they have any discernible talent.

I love The Police. I find it really hard to criticise Sting just 'cause of what The Police contributed to music (and they got there the hard way as well). I do like a handful of his solo songs too I guess, but not nearly as much. He's so right about the X Factor though. I'm glad he said it rather than being like most other stars these days and agreeing to appear on it to promote themselves.

Yes indeed. Whilst Sting can be profoundly twatish, he's right on this occasion. I think we'll look back at the X-factor as contributing precisely zero to quality music.

And Power Rangers and Zig & Zag. I can't forgive him for that but I still fancy him. Yes, X factor is just a live, televised karaoke show but I'm addicted and enjoy it every single week.
