SJA: Mona Lisa's Revenge (12/13 Nov)

Don't think anybody has made a thread on this yet, so what did you all think of the episode so far?

I really enjoyed the first part, I like the sassy attitude of Mona Lisa and the idea of putting people frozen into paintings is actually quite spooky! I also like the idea of Luke wanting to be like a normal teenager, it shows a more human side towards him.

I agree about Luke, good to see he's not the factory-made perfect boy any more. And I noticed the class code included the number 11, confirming the kids as being 15-16, and meaning the kids should leave school at the start of the next series. Makes me wonder what Rani's dad is going to do, he'll lose a few storylines if Park Vale School is no longer used.

So, Mona Lisa is an alien who's been hanging in the Louvre for 500 years.
So how exactly does that fit in with the plot of City of Death, in which the painting Tom Baker and Co left in the Louvre was a fake? Very, very shoddy, guys. Deliberately contradicting classic Who is not on!

Hang on, so that means either City of Death or Mona Lisa's Revenge cannot be canon. Well spotted!

Info about City of Death - there's actually several duplicates of the Mona Lisa, I guess we assume the one in MLR is the true original. http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/class...h/detail.shtml

Suranne Jones seemed to be having an absolute whale of a time.

Two words - Sixth Form. Luke has already said he plans to go to university so Sixth Form would be a good option, easy to do on the show. Rani will probably want to pursue journalism and Clyde art, perhaps. They could all just be at the same Sixth Form college, no problems.

But it was stated at the end of City of Death that the version left in the Louvre at the end of that story was one of the fakes and had 'I am a fake' written in felt tip under the paint. They've really screwed things up, here.

Suranne Jones using her Manchester accent to play the Mona Lisa rather spoilt it, as even if it is fiction, there has to be some belief of reality.

Or, maybe TML was painted by Leonardo da Chadderton.

Maybe a post-Tom Baker Doctor put the real ML back in a yet undocumented adventure

I was surprised that none of that characters commented of Mona's distinct lack of an Italian accent

How do we know how Italians sounded back in Mona Lisa's day?

They might well have all sounded like extras from Coronation Street.

Really, really enjoying this one.

Phil Ford's writing on this is so wonderfully naughty - the assistant who lusts from afar and has an online dating webpage (Mr Smith: "Her interests include Salsa. She says she is open minded -), plus some cracking lines, "not a hormonal SAS".

And the scene between Mr Smith and Sarah Jane about the loss of children who fly the nest was wonderfully sad. However, I'm not sure where this sudden crack in Luke and Sarah Jane's relationship has come from; there's been nothing to suggest this was coming.

There's still an episode to go and fanboy Russell must have at least thought about this. After all, CoD is the one Julie Gardner picked as the model for New Who.

This is one of the best Sarah Jane episodes so far. Much better than the dull dross of last week.

I'm really noticing the fact that they can hardly afford extras anymore.

A tremendous romp with some cheeky bits and bobs here and there. Agree about the rift between SJ and Luke being sudden, they could have seeded it easily into last week's story by having Luke stay behind not only because he didn't believe in ghosts but also because they'd argued about something.

Suranne Jones may have appeared to be enjoying herself, I however felt that she looked very awkward, and didn't seem to be able to act to well, even her evil laugh was shoddy and didn't sync with her moving her lips, poor production there.

This has to be the weakest episode of the third series so far, the only saving grace was the reference to 'Planet of the Dead'.

That's where they did create a hole of their own making... in telling us it was the same museum from PotD, they then, because it was a kids show, couldn't show the security guards - because in PotD, they had guns. BIG guns.

Also, anyone else recognise the Mona Lisa's room from somewhere else?

I am thinking it will be explained or at least mentioned that she isn't the original in the end.

Just out of interest how many stories of the series are left now? Is this story the last two episodes?

Shows how opinions differ; I loved last weeks and think this one (so far) is the worst since Revenge of the Slitheen.

I loved it !! Surrane was brilliant and it was almost like seeing her do Karen from Corrie again.
Was it just me or did the main room look a lot like the hall in "The End Of The World" where Rose seen all those aliens ?

I totally agree. The overacting by the guest actors this week spoilt it for me.

They said in this episode that Da Vinci had to borrow the paints from his neighbour to paint this Mona Lisa.

Sounds to me he had used up all his own paint on the other 4 "Fakes" and had to use the alien paint on the 5th one (which just happened to be the one that survived the fire).

Could have done without the corrie accent from Mona though.

Yep , it's the Temple of Peace in Cardiff.
