Firefly and Serenity
Hurrah! A Sci Fi forum.
After recently rewatching Farscape from start to finish (the greatest Sci Fi ever on TV), I decided I needed something new. Being a big fan of Buffy, I figured I'd give Firefly a go on DVD. For those of you who don't know, it's by Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy and Angel), and had a run on the Fox network in the US last year (I think) before being cancelled after they only showed 8 or so episodes. 14ish episodes were made, so many were never shown. The DVD of all the episodes was released a while back and has done so well, and had such a great following that Joss has been able to get funding for a series of films to be shown in cinemas (although I expect they anticipate making all their money from DVD sales). I usually hate getting into shows that I know are cancelled, but after my late arrival to Farscape I figured it had to be worth a go. It was! It's great. The film "Serenity" is out in September and carries on from where the series left off. So it's well worth getting the Firefly series if you're a Sci-Fi fan, not only because it's a great series, but there are some films to look forward to as well, best enjoyed having watched the series. Personally I feel the mix of western and technology works really well. It's something that is really hard to pull off without looking cheap and lame, but Joss manages it in spades. The characters on the ship are deep and believeable, and much like Farscape, the show focuses more on character relationships and development than amazing special effects. I also applaud Joss for attempting the "no sound in space" shots. Whenever we see a space ship flying in space, there is NO SOUND at all. This is the most realistic of course, but is very hard to make it work since you can lose so much atmosphere. It's a good try and mostly works. Can't wait for Serenity now, anyone else? |

I to had missed it on its TV showing but kept reading what a fantastic show it was. Finally bit the bullet & bought it of Play. COM for £15.99 a few months back, what a bargain. Love the cursing in Chinese.

I do get the feeling Serenity will be a straight to DVD release in the UK.
Mostly because Joss Whedon absolutely stinks at writing decent sci-fi/fantasy without resorting to cliche or lesbianism. |

I'm amazed that Firefly isn't more popular: terrestrial tv must have heard of it by now.
Granted there aren't many episodes but that can't be the only reason it only ever appears on satellite. It looks like the only way to see it in it's correct widescreen state is to buy the dvd set like I did. It must be one of the wittiest sf shows ever created and interviews with the cast give the impression that not only did they enjoy working on it but that they were genuinely dismayed when it was cancelled. Joss Whedon took quite a risk creating a futuristic show set in space without aliens or robots but pulled it off with great style. We should't be surprised normal tv has overlooked it; they've never shown The Flash either.

I totally disagree about his writing. Most episodes are a fairly fresh look at something which could come over as very tired and cliche. He's done a great job. |

There have been preview showings of Serenity both in the UK and the US which have received high praise After seeing the trailer I'm looking forward to it even more. They showed the episodes out of order for Firefly in the US so it wasn't any wonder it did badly there. natural lamer don't you just love the commentary on the episodes with Joss and Nathan Fillion. Hilarious

The effects there are are well done, it's a good package. Farscape had stunning effects (and prosthetics!) but even so the prime focus was on the characters. Wonderfully Firefly seems to have the same focus.

WooHoo! A thread on this forum not about Dr Who.
I loved Firefly. I really felt that it was starting to build towards something great, in the same way the the first series of Buffy was very good, but not as good as what followed. Wasn't too keen on the FX style though, and I wasn't too keen either when they did exactly the same thing for Battlestar Galactica. Hate Farscape. Can't see how you can draw any parallels between the two, as really Firefly is all about the sharp dialogue and the characters, and Farscape to me always seemed really wooden. |

I actually felt the same way as you did until BBC3 showed the series from the start again a while back. I was totally blown away and really had to reevaluate my view on what I had previously pegged as "muppets in space".Farscape is primarily about strong characters and character development, and it's pretty relentless once you get to the 2nd season. I feel there are similarities with Firefly in that regard, the show revolves around characters who you quickly end up caring about and enjoy watching them develop. Still I doubt I'll convince you! ![]() Anyway, it's great we'll get some more Firefly in the form of the movie. Not too long now... |

I missed Firefly when it was on TV and I have been meaning to buy it on DVD but havnt yet got around to it. I will have to check on Play to see if they are still selling it for £15.99 as that sounds like a bargain for a boxset!
Serenity is due out in the UK on the 7th of October so we have still got a bit of a wait but enough time for me to catch up on the whole series of Firefly! |

Still, well worth getting even at full price. The more people who buy it the more follow up movies we'll get as well! Also for you Farscape fans, if the Firefly movie does well this increases the chance we'll get a Farscape movie at some point. Get out there and spend your cash ![]() Edited to add: Full price at Amazon, play etc. However, it's £16.99 at CD WOW, get it at the reduced price while you still can! Firefly...what can I say...my favourite show by a mile, I loved it. Even with the bitter sweet (well, just bitter really) knowledge that it was already cancelled by the time I got to see it.
I believe Serenity is definitely getting a cinema release over here; a little after the states (November 4th I think?...). As to Farscape...have to admit I hated it at first as well....then I caught the 4-5 episode arc which first brought Scorpius/Stark in, and that made me reevaluate it. Now its one of my favourites. Still not as good as Firefly though! VB |

I'm also particularly fond of Adam singing the Jayne song while wearing his silly hat ![]() The Serenity trailer looks stunning - and it seems to be playing out a whole story so we actually get a resolution, which I'm desperate for. Am I right in thinking it's a three-picture deal? |

Peej, you are talking absolute shite. The movies trailer hits UK cinemas in a few weeks, and will be very heavily promoted here. There is a screening tour of the UK across 3 or 4 cities taking place in August, where fans will get to see the movie first. That doesn't happen. There's HUGE confidence on this one in the UK. I've seen the movie. And it's absolutely freakin' amazing. Seriously. The movie opens October 7th in the UK, as is a full blown, across the UK, main stream, in cinema for weeks (if not months) job. Anybody suggesting differently, put simply, is wrong. |

Jayne is the best (apart of course from the delectable Captain Mal 'Tightpants' himself). Favourite scene is when Jayne is pretending to read Simon's diary when Simon and River get kidnapped - "best day ever!" Oh and trying to trade 'Vera' for Mal's wife and the hero of Canton and ..well actually every gorram episode is just pretty damn fine! I am so looking forward to Serenity on the big screen - I'd be devastated if it went straight to DVD !

The DirectToDVD rumours have been going for about a year now. It's pretty funny reading them from my position, it has to be said.
Trailer is at serenitymovie.com, if people haven't seen it. Yes, Book is in the movie. Yes, it has about 30x the budget of an average episode of Firefly. Yes, it's very funny. Yes, it's very shocking. Sequels will only be made if the movie makes a mint at the cinema. It's purely on condition of profit. So, take your friends, family and pets to the cinema. |

How do you market a movie based on... well.. nothing before? The same way. The TV series is starting again on Sci-Fi in the US, just before the new series of Stargate SG-1 and Altantis, so it will get much coverage overseas. SERENITY in the UK is going to be about educating everybody about why they need to see it. I admit, that's a tough job. There will be 3 or 4 major screenings in August - DS members welcome (PM me for details) with special guests. These will likely also draw press coverage for many reasons. This is one of Universals biggest launches of the year - second only to the upcoming KING KONG (which looks fab, by the way), so by October 7th, Average Joe will know about this movie event. |

It's astonishing that lame stuff like Buffy and Angel gets shown on an apparently endless loop and Firefly gets ignored. Perhaps it's because there are so few episodes, although most big budget UK fantasy shows don't have many episodes either...Hex,anyone?

I think the key to Serenity making it big will be word of mouth...word of mouth when it comes out, sure, but before that Firefly fans bigging it up to their mates. I've lent my DVD set to 4 or 5 mates so far, of whom 3 have bought it themselves subsequently (and one still has my set 3 weeks later...
).If you like it, show it to your mates, build support from the ground up, rather than consigning it to oblivion! VB |

I was a (huge) fan of Firefly long before the movie was greenlit, as were several of the people in the UK charged with selling this movie. We call ourselves browncoats. Because we are. As a browncoat, I had huge expectations seeing a rough cut of the movie in March, and I was thinking "Oooh, shite, what if this is bad??" as I went in. Huge expectations. All supassed. Regarding Firefly on terrestrial - unfortunately, this ain't up to certain people. 20th Century Fox (not Universal) still own the television rights, and can charge what they want for them. |

Word of mouth is often enough to get people to a movie... think The Full Monty. Or, more recently, Shaun of the Dead... hugely loyal small fanbase from Spaced, yet one of rthe most popular movies of last year. I suspect (and hope) Serenity will be the same. And that's not forgetting all the Joss Whedon fans from his Buffy/Angel days who'll want to see more from the man himself. Personally I was never a great fan of Buffy/Angel - only having terrestrial tends to do that - but loved Firefly (I was a DVD latecomer, I have to admit). The characterisation, scripts, everything, was just right. I watched all the episodes in one sitting, even throwing a sickie from work to do so... like the proverbial book you can't put down. Knowing it had to end was torture so I certainly can't wait for the film.

Yep. Agreed, cuilean. Word of mouth is going to be a huge factor here. I'm running a SERENITY booth in Birmingham at the NEC in August, and similar such stuff.
DVD sales for Firefly are through the roof. It's currently in the top ten selling DVD charts in the US. A full two years after preorders for it began. That just doesn't happen. It's outselling Star Wars (full screen boxset), The Incredibles, Lost Season 1, Harry Potter etc. Word of mouth is having a large effect here, as the show is really good, so it's a good one to pimp to friends. I just lent my boxset out to a mate on Monday night. She's working her way through the episodes now. Magazines like Empire love Firefly, and I'm willing to bet may just pimp this movie all over the place as it gets closer to release. It's also one of the most talked about films after the movie I've ever seen with fans (there have been two closed screenings in London earlier in the year) so it will generate a lot of after buzz on release. Fingers crossed the dollars (and pounds) roll in for this one purely for my own selfish desire - this film NEEDS sequels. |
