"The Onedin Line" : UKTV Drama
I know there may not be many who care about this but I've been really enjoying "The Onedin Line" every Sunday morning on UKTV Drama only to find that they won't be showing the rest of it !
Anyone know WHY they've decided to stop showing it and whether they'll ever screen the next episodes ? Thank you. |

I don't think we should give up hope yet. UK Drama have a bad habit of showing the first series or two several times before going on to the next one. However, perhaps we can take heart from the example of Casualty which they seem to be showing from the beginning although every other month.
I sometimes thing that UK Drama have the laziest programmers in the world as they show the same stuff over and over and over again! |

I'd really got into watching 'Secret Army' which they showed before the Onedin Line and then that stopped. What's all that about?

They showed the Onedin Line here in the U.S. back in the '70's, I think, and when I saw part of it was available on dvd, I bought it. Brought back memories :-). I hope they continue issuing the dvds.

If you have a look on eBay, you can find the 2nd and 3rd series available on DVD. They're Dutch, but the programmes are in English and you can switch the Dutch subtitles off!
I don't know why they're not available in the UK. |

Its really anoyed me, enjoyed watching the 1st series of Secret Army and theyve stopped it, then they started showing Onedin Line from the very beggining i thought brilliant as i hadnt seen it since a joung child in the 70's, but typically they stopped it at the end of the 2nd series.
This is what is anoying about channels on the Sky platform , none of them can ever show anything properly all the way through, unfortunatly iam having difficulty tracking Onedin Line down on dvd, after the 3rd series nothing is available. |

I posted a question on this when they ended its weekday run last month after the last episode of series 2.
A DS reader kindly advised that they were alternating it (why?) with series of Casualty and that Series 3 of the Onedin Line is back at the very end of August in the same weekday slot as Casualty now occupies. Hope thats true and if so the weekend omnibus will probably return then, too. |

Rerunning episodes shown only a few weeks ago creates the impresion that the channel are just a no budget cheap filler outfit. Surely they have to know that 90% of this shows primary audience wont watch it all again so quickly.
The suspicion also must be that they will stop screening again at the end of series 2 making the whole exercise little more than a joke. I hope this is an unfounded fear and that come October they will show all of the series from 3 onwards...but I have my doubts. At least they did not do the ITV 3 trick (see my posts on Providence yesterday and today on this part of the forum) - although this is nearly as bad. If ITV 3 or UKTV Drama get the rights to 24, watch out...They will rename it 22 and screen all bar the final two hours given that these are only the cliffhanger resolution so dont really matter. Anybody know how to ask UKTV Drama what they are planning regards The Onedin Line? |

typical, it must be just as easy to show a show from start to end, as it is to continuoisly repeat it

Tried that. The reply (after I had to give several explanations)was - cannot find any trace of The Onedin Line being on this week. I explained that I was aware of that, but it is apparently back next month. However it seems to be starting again at season 1. Wouldnt know anything about that, I was told. I further asked when - or if - the rest of the series from season 3 onwards would be screened? Predictably, they didnt know about that either, but I might try contacting the channel directly in London. Dont think I can afford a lengthy long distance call where I would probably be told that nobody knows there either. But someone who lives in London might want to try. If so the number to call for the programme planner of UK TV Drama is apparently: Someone called Yesim (I think that is how it was pronounced): on 0207 765 0725 |

Just an update...after checking the schedules for next week. After the last episode of series 2, yet again UK TV Drama are taking off 'The Onedin Line'. No doubt it will be back eventually - at the start again!
Do they seriously expect anyone to hang about for months remembering to keep checking the fine print of what episodes they are transmitting in the hope that sometime they will deign to screen series 3 onward? This channel are not providing entertainment to their viewers - more like torture. Pity some half decent channel doesnt screen these series instead, as I dont see the sense at all in recycling the same few episodes when they could just as easily show all series in order. That way they please both drop in viewers and anyone who wants to actually follow a story on this channel. Right now thats completely wrecked by their absurd programme policy. Much as I want to see series 3 onward there is no way I am going to keep checking their schedules for yet more months then, presumably, sitting through series 1 and 2 again before they bother to go further - if they ever do. This is a channel pleasing only itself and having zero consideration for loyal viewers. |

If I were the director general of the BBC, I would repeat The Onedin Line for you all on BBC-1 in the daytime instead of the garbage they do show at this moment in time. It was the BBC at its best harryfielder your quite right.

I'll add my penny worth here. I too was just getting into Mr Onidin and off it goes into oblivion.
Mind you... A lot of the channels do this sort of nonsense. Look at FX and the mucking around with X-files! This does raise an interesting question in my mind! Is not pretty much all satellite TV aimed at "casual viewers"? IE. They don't care about regular viewers, just people see "program X" is on and watch it. Mutter. mutter, mutter. |
