Our kind of music

A new station has arrived on Now Reading called Our kind of music. Text says they play classic and contemporary Jazz. Website is www.ourkindofmusic.net.

If that means it's expanding its coverage, great.

An imaginative format, with what appears to be a very wide playlist of "American standards" -- Bing, Ella, Tony Bennett; it would probably please the Sunday Radio 2 audience. Certainly pleases me.

To receive it here in north London (from Essex, I think) the DAB receiver has to sit on top of a pile of boxes.

I took my Pure PocketDAB on the train to Essex recently and had a listen to Our Kind Of Music. Maybe I caught it at a bad time but the music was very anodyne, considering the claim on their web site that they play new, original musicians and jazz "when it is 'paying its dues'" it was a big disappointment to hear nothing but old vocal pop.

Its a charming little station run by a guy in his eighties I believe.

I was driving around town yesterday with it cranking out my windows! You get some strange looks but Jazz sounds sooo good loud!

Apparently it was going to be called Radio Ella after Ella Fitzgerrald.

I prefer the name, Radio Ella.

It is run by a guy called Eddie Blackwell, who is now 79 or 80 years old, and a keen jazz fan!

He was (still is?) the Chairman of Essex Radio (now Essex FM) and was on the directors board at GWR a few years ago as well. When Essex Radio started 25 years ago (anniversary is less than a month away), he did a jazz programme every Saturday evening, hence this current venture of his.

I wonder if they will be putting it on more NOW muxes.

NOW Cornwall / NOW Plymouth, please (there's tons of room on either mux IIRC)

Sounds excellent.

Who are the Presenters?

Can I get it in from anywhere here din Pinner NW London or along the South Coast?

I used to listen to Eddy`s Nostalgia on Essex Radio back in 86.

It's owned by Gcap isn't it.

The 80 year old bloke thing's just a viral marketing thingy.. just like Chill was supposedly made by a student in his bedroom.

They're both just computers (probably sat next to each other) in a rack somewhere in the depths of Leicester Square.

Well OurKindOfMusic has been broadcasting for about 2 or 3years now. No adverts or presenters., therefore it is another non profit making DAB radio station!!! I listen to the internet audio stream which is a good high quality stream. I notice that the audio stream URL includes musicradio.com so it must therefore be part of the GCap group.

Interesting with TheJazz closing I wonder how many listeners of TheJazz know about this station? Prpbably not many.

The web site is terrible. Very little useful information and it has not been updated in the last 2 years. Also, the web stream does not show artist and track title information. Surely it can't be that expensive to add the facility to show track name and artist? http://www.ourkindofmusic.co.uk/

Did a search on Ourkindofmusic and found this from 3 years ago! Has also some interesting notes on digital radio.

it is the brainchild of Eddie Blackwell, a former director of GWR. The format is clearly not aimed at the under 35s. Blackwell, 78, a radio industry veteran, describes himself as "fiendishly devoted to jazz and the great American song book.
In the 60s he helped run pirate Radio London with Kenny Everett and went on to draw up the marketing plan for Classic FM. The ourkindofmusic playlist, computerised by GWR, comes from his own vast record collection, with help from like-minded friends.

Ralph Bernard, chief executive of GCap, who gave Blackwell the go-ahead after warming to his passion, points to it as an example of how commercial radio must hunt for fresh formats and audiences, to take on the BBC. He has no idea if it will find an audience, or not. After all, Jazz FM was renamed Smooth FM as part of the hunt for audiences.

But more broadly, something of a tipping point seems to be occurring: of the 422 digital stations, 229 are now original, outstripping the 193 simply "simulcasting" existing stations outside of their analogue licence area. Other examples range from 3C in Scotland and Northern ireland, playing non-stop country music, and Fun Radio for kids.

perhaps GCAP were running it as a favour for him and looks like the station might not last much longer.

It isn't working online, I can't tell if it is still running on DAB because I am not in a coverage area, but if it is gone there, I would safely say that the station has been axed.

Their station is working fine on DAB...just tried it
There are so many stations coming off of DAB now I was surprised that Our Kind of Music was still broadcasting on DAB
Strange why their web streaming is dead though.

Yup, on all last night and today on DAB here in high-up north London (from Southend/Colchester, I think)

It's still fab; I never get bored with the songs or the format, and the playlist seems good 'n broad to me.

There's a couple of astonishingly inappropriate sweepers. What did they think they were doing when they put them in the running list??

I agree about the sweepers. My Dad has complained to them several times about them.

Still on air here on the Reading/Basingstoke DAB Mux.

Still on air from Blunsdon but the same tunes seem to come round more often and the text is stuck on "You're listening to Basin Street Blues by Bing Crosby".

Could the end be near? I've always enjoyed its output and been grateful for a station that offered this type of music (or anything different to pop pap) but I've never understood how it could keep going.

Does anyone know anything?

Keith
