Cause for Celebration - Opal Fruits!
I have been a big fan of the Opal Fruit my entire life, and even loved Splicers when they were out (like lots of coloured Opal Fruits twisted together). It was a dark day for me when they were renamed Starburst. What a terrible name. This totally messes with many of my childhood memories.
Anyway, I have just been to the local Tesco and purchased a packet of Starburst. When it was swiped through the scanner, what do you think came up on the modern display of a brand new till in a new store? - OPAL FRUITS 42 PENCE! How fantastic is that? The name lives on through it's barcode. Oh happy day! Rudi ™

Tesco is clearly supporting an anti-European stance. Obviously. |

I'm a bit disappointed...I was hoping this thread would be to announce they had decided to change the name back to Opal Fruits....kind of like what they did when the briefly changed the name of 'cocoa pops' to 'choco crispies'

When Opal fruits changed to Starburst, didn't they scrap a flavour as well? Wasn't there a lemon flavour in the packet or am I going mad?

The lime and the lemon were combined into one sweet when they brought in the blackcurrent flavour. The blackcurrent is my favorite sweet. |

When I was 11, in hospital getting my adenoids removed, I recall coming round after the operation. I could barely move, but was starving, and knew there was an emergency packet in the drawer beside the bed. It seemed to take an age to get the packet, remove one and unwrap it. I could then only scape slivers off with my teeth. But oh, the ecstasy! Rudi ™

What I hate about Opal fruits/Starburst is the sticky wrappers being shoved down my car seats/sofa, discarded on the carpets, or the gooey one that escapes into my washing machine.

Sadly I can no longer eat them as I come out in lumps, but tell me, are they still like acidy flavoured liquid plastic?
I always liked those 'Pacers' which were like Opal Fruits but mint flavoured and green and white striped colour... oh and then those chewy 'Texan' bars....mmmm |

I remember Apple Flavoured Chewits were pulled because of some suspect ingredient. They were great though. The best flavoured chewy sweet ever by far is the the pear flavoured Fruitella. Rudi ™

I thought they had renamed them back to opal fruits for a second.
It reminds me when coco pops changed there name to something else, but eventually changed it back

Blackjacks and Fruit Salads
Trip down memory lane. I can remember when decimalisation came in. Black jacks and fruit salads used to be 4 for 1 old penny (there were 240 of those to the pound in those days). In comes the new money, and my then favourite sweets were STILL 4 for a penny.

The title of this thread is very misleading. I honestly thought that St*****sts were going to be given their proper name back. It reminds me of a thread last week called 'Margaret Thatcher'. Opening the thread took forever, only to be faced with the disappointment that she was turning 80, and hadn't met her maker.

What were those things that were a lot like opal fruits but with bits of fizzy flavour within them that looked like darker, shinier bits of the actual sweets. The name has totally escaped me.
