Star Trek Returns to BBC2...

Great news for Star Trek fans. It looks as though BBC2 are re-running the original Star Trek series and the first series of Star Trek The Next Generation from Saturday 8th July.

BBC2: Sat 8th July:
2.55pm Star Trek The Original Series: The Cage (Pilot episode)
4.00pm Star Trek The Next Generation: Encounter at Far Point (Pilot episode)

Not before time the BBC finally bringing back Star Trek. This probably coninsides with Star Trek's 40th anniversary in September.

They will probably show just a few episodes, not the entire series I expect.

i used to love it when bbc 2 used to show Star Trek The Next Generation or The Fresh Prince or The New Adventures Of Superman at 6 every evening

Wish they would start doing that again

Yes me too, BBC2 used to dedicate it's 6pm slot to sci-fi programming every week, but since 2003 BBC2 have gradually removed all sci-fi programming from their evening schedules.
I think putting Star Trek on Saturday's is a great idea and giving it a peak afternoon slot is brilliant scheduling for some of us Trekkie's.
Let's hope that BBC2 show the first series of both TOS & TNG series.

They did show one episode of Star Trek a year or two ago as part of some special feature. Are we sure this is the start of a long run?

Yes BBC2 shown the second pilot for the Original series last summer 'Where No Man Has Gone Before', which was shown as part of a moon landing event or a mars rocket which launched I think it was, I can't quite recall.
This could be a one off screening, but I will find it odd BBC2 showing the 2 pilot episodes for both TOS and TNG just as a one-off.
I will email the BBC when I get home from work and ask the question if this is indeed a re-run and see what they come back with.

I don't know if anyone remembers but about a couple of years ago BBC2 were showing repeats of the complete run of TNG (for a 2nd time) but stopped somewhere in the 6th series & never completed the episodes into season 7. (I think they stopped just before the Descent 2-parter). As with the X-Files (& lots of other US imports) I wonder if they have now lost the rights to repeating all of the shows.

On the downside, of course, does this spell the end for 'Watching the Detectives' on Saturdays on BBC2? I guess the end was nigh when they lost out on 'Rockford Files' repeats to ITV. Still hopefully we'll get to see the 4th season of Monk later in the year.

Yes and BBC2 also did the same thing the last time they shown a re-run of the original series, they stopped showing the series half way through the third season for some reason.
The 'Watching the Detectives' season does look as though it may be coming to a close. Since Roly Keating took over from Jane Root in 2004 as BBC2 controller, this season has been decreased considerably in favour for Saturday afternoon movie screenings. I'm quite glad BBC2 are ending the 'Watching the Detectives' season to be honest. Maybe this will ensure a more peak time screening for the fourth series of Monk when it returns to BBC2 probably later in the year.

The BBC showing complete seasons of Star Trek, translates as "We'll show it until something else comes along, and not in the order that they should be aired"

Yes, or... 'We'll show it, until the next sporting event arrives and we won't show it again for another 4 weeks'.

Are these the digitally remastered episodes of the Original Series or just the normal stuff?

The last time BBC2 shown the original Star Trek series, they were the digitally remastered copies, so hopefully the BBC will be showing these same versions again.
It's great that the BBC (if this is indeed a re-run) are starting showing Star Trek from the original pilot episode 'The Cage'. I've only recently bought the remastered version of this episode on DVD and found the quality and sound excellent.

Hope there not the same as the digitally remasted episodes shown on SCI-FI as they are awful.

Exactly. It's just a bandwagon. Beeb have never had much respect for sci-fi, and have ruined many a rerun. Best just buying the uncut DVDs.

The "digitally remastered" versions are poor compared to what we now expect from something that has been DR'ed.
The entire original series was released on R1 some years before the box sets we now have were available.
I had them all,and they were DR'ed aswell.
The current dvd's and broadcasts all come from these versions(unless the BBC have brand new ones) .
These versions were prepared in the late 90's and digital remastering has come a long way in the last few years and while the dvd's look ok compared to the versions we had on tv and VHS in the 80's,they don't look good compared to many of the other shows of the same era.
Star Trek was made on 35mm film and unlike TNG onwards it was not transferred to video for editing and addition of effects,so TOS could look as good as a cinema film.
Ironically, clips used in the dvd documentaries of some episodes are clearly superior to the actual dvd versions themselves, indicating that some fresh remastering has taken place, certainly of some episodes.
Unless someone at the BBC has taken a very informed new look at Star Trek and decided to show them in production order ,this could be a one off.
The original R1 dvd's and UK VHS were all in production order, but since the dvd's came out,all of them, and even SF channel broadcasts have reverted to the original US transmission order, which is way off

The BBC may be testing the sci-fi waters again, with the success of Dr. Who.

I'd much rather see Star Trek and similar on dark evenings than in July which seems like a daft time to start showing it.
It's hard to see space scenes (there are some!) when the room is lit by bright sunlight streaming through the curtains.
