Goodnight Sweetheart - Actresses

Have been watching Goodnight Sweetheart on ITV3 this past two weeks - first time I have seen it for years!

I had forgotten how much I loved the series and the whole premise of the sitcom.

Anyhow - They have now had an episode with the two new actresses.

Does anyone know why the original two left at all?

They both quit apparently - Dervla Kirwan to concentrate on Ballykissangel according to:

I have also been watching the show in the afternoons for the last few weeks and am really enjoying it, and had forgotten how good it was.

Liz Carling isn't a patch on Dervla Kirwan as Phoebe and nowhere near as pretty, but the new Yvonne is much more foxy than the original Yvonne. They've just started showing Lovejoy on ITV3 after Goodnight Sweetheart, a great lineup for mid afternoon.

I never get tired of watching the repeats. It was a great show and I think it would be fantastic if they were to make a one-off episode to bring us up to date with how Gary is coping with life in the 1940's after he permanantly went to live there with Pheobe.

He could find another time travel thingy and return back to the modern world to see how Yvonne is coping without him.

Great idea, I think there is more mileage in this story and they could even make a new series, now set in the 50's. OK Yvonnes gone forever, and it would be funny to see how Gary adapts to the 50's and the influenece he has.

Let's be honest there isn't exactly a wealth of good sitcoms on BBC at the moment, and it's got to be better than the now rapidly decling My Hero, which I liked for the first few series, but it's gone downhill fast.

Yeah, great idea. What is Nick Lyndhurst up to at present, anyone know? Maybe we could put this suggestion to him!

I have also been watching Goodnight Sweetheart on ITV3 for the last few weeks - I was flicking around channels and actually stumbled across the first ever episode when Gary first went back to the 1940's - he thought it was a dream, then thought the Royal Oak was a 1940's theme pub.

I too preferred Dervla to Liz, although I think Liz is nice - especially now she's a doctor in Casualty.

A great programme, and I can't believe it's over 10 years since they made it - it needs to come back!

I could never take Michelle Holmes seriously as the original Yvonne after seeing Rita, Sue and Bob too

I liked this show so much,it was different.I liked all involved.
Emma Amos[new Yvonne is under used IMO.]It is good to see Michelle Holmes in The Chase.Michelle looks different[it looks as though she has had a nose job perhaps.]
Nicholas Lyndhurst is brilliant, the way he delivers his lines reminds me os Geoffrey Palmer for me,ironic really as Nic starred in 'Butterflies.'
Victor mcguire is also very good, again underused as I think he has a good face for television.

I always liked Goodnight Sweetheart but I don't know whether bringing it back would just wring every last joke out of it, like with Only Fools and Horses which was ruined.

I always preferred the first three series with the original actresses. Dervla Kirwan is much much better as Phoebe; Liz Carling always looked older and more 'matronly' somehow. The second Yvonne isn't as bad as I first thought and whereas I preferred Phoebe to Yvonne in the beginning, after the actress changes I thought Yvonne became more likeable.

Same here. Although I also prefer Michelle Holmes to Emma Amos. I think it's the whole replacement thing - it doesn't really work.

I remember when watching it first time around, I didn't even notice they were different actors at first, even watching it now both are very similar to the ones they replaced and didn't make a difference to a good programme.

I collect the DVDs of the series, however I'm only collecting slowly, just have the first 3 as I wait until they can be bought for not much money, because as much as I like the programme, I am a tight git.

http://www.find-dvd.co.uk is a good place to find who supply the cheapest.

It was a shame the two main actresses left, I liked Dervla Kirwan especially, and had no idea she was Irish. Loved her cheeky little laugh.

Actually when the switch happened i had been in the US for a year and was somewhat baffled at the change.

anyhow...

While I would love it to come back I doubt there is real mileage in it. Really hard to do.

The writing became quite shabby later on (at times) and got all 'new labour' obsessed. I know it sounds odd to say considering the premise of the whole thing but I think such references tend to now 'date it'!

Has any series like this ever come back in a successful way?
I do not recall one - and frankly I am still realing from Green Green Grass.

Such a comeback at a later stage reminds me of something Ron said to Gary about looking forward to the sixties - to which Gary replies (of the top of my head) "no I will be in my 50's so won't approve".

What a classic, I am seriously considering buying the DvD's.

GS was a great idea and early on was very well scripted and enjoyable to watch. The problem, as with so many series, is that there is only a certain amount of mileage in a particular situation before it gets stale or too ridiculous. Fawlty Towers(two series) and Porridge(3) maintained an almost faultless standard all the way though.
Having said that I thought Only Fools and Horses was pretty top notch right up until 1996. It was only when it came back early in this decade that it had lost something.

Wiki says that Dervla Kirwin voices the Marks & Sparks "This is not just food..." ads. Doesn't sound like her.

You're joking.
She's not a character actress for nothing.

Dervla Kirwan was in 55 degrees north. Don't know whether they are bringing that back though. Be a shame if they don't.
