Talk Talk throttling?

Have talk talk started throttling there service. I have never had any problems with my bittorrent speeds in the past but now I am unable to get it to go above 5KB/s. Anyone know why, and what can I do to help it, aside from switching to Utorrent? Would changing my port help, and if so how would I do that. Thanks.

TalkTalk website:

"Our fair use policy is designed to ensure your service is fast and reliable 24 hours a day. A very small number of customers use file-sharing software (commonly known as "peer to peer" or P2P) or other applications, which constantly send and receive video and other very large files.

This type of activity uses a huge amount of bandwidth and can significantly reduce the speed at which our other customers can access the Internet, especially at peak times

Our fair use policy restricts this high bandwidth activity in peak hours to allow the majority of customers to use their broadband connection for normal residential usage (I.e: surfing, e-mail, online gaming etc). This allows us to give you a high quality service 24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

Maybe they are just cracking down on it now... though it does mention that if you constantly use a lot of bandwidth they "may restrict your general Internet service throughout the entire day"

My exchange has recently gone through the LLU experience since which time, things have generally improved and I have a 8.1 mb connection.

However, things are still patchy/painfully slow at times so I suspect they are still struggling to meet demand at peak times.

I tend to use Utorrent and just leave it to get on with it overnight.

Hope this helps.

Hi

My TT too is very slow when up/down loading torrent files. However, I though the idea of a torrent was that it couldn't be picked up by an ISP. I thought my slow speeds circa 20/30kb/s were due to the torrent itslef and/or general slow broadband speed of TT.

In addition, my TT broadband keeps disconneting at random anyway, which means I have to re-boot everything and re-start the torrent, but that's another story!

From when TalkTalk first appeared a couple of years ago they have used traffic shaping.

Back in the early days, P2P was completely blocked, as in you would be lucky to get 0.5k/s.

They use packet sniffing programmes, if it isn't HTTP or email traffic then it's shaped, if it's P2P then it's heavily shaped.

Port forwarding will make no difference, TalkTalk examine the traffic no matter what port it comes through on. You can try enabling protocol encryption on your P2P programme, so TalkTalk have difficulty in seeing that it is P2P, it may help as long as enough people are also using it.

Cracking down on it now, I was with TalkTalk a couple of years back when you had to pay, and they were cracking down on it back then.

A few people were getting away for a short while without much shaping.

TalkTalk didn't have capacity from day one, they still don't have capacity now.

I know this is an old thread and the OP probably has an answer now but ...
I use TT, my connection speed is 1.1Mbps and a couple of months ago my download speeds dropped from average of 50-80kB/s to 1-5kB/s if i was lucky!
This week they have suddenly gone back up, no idea why!
Don't want to jinx it but just thought i'd tell people!
