Sky+ Subscription

Many of you have feverently been discussing rumours on the forums that Sky is about to scrap the £10 monthly subscription charge for Sky+. Many of you have also requested that we confirm the rumours one way of the other, once and for all.

Well here goes. It’s true!

We hope you’ll find answers to all your questions on this below...

When does it happen?
As of 1st July 2007, the Sky+ subscription charge of £10 will be removed for all Sky Digital customers subscribed to any Sky Digital package.

Does it depend on which package I subscribe to?
No, you will not have to pay a subscription charge for Sky+ after the 1st July, regardless of which Sky Digital package you subscribe to or how long you’ve been a customer with us.

How do I apply for this?
You don’t need to do anything. If you currently pay for the Sky+ subscription you will receive notification by letter in the next few days. And after the 1st of July you’ll see a £10 saving from your monthly Sky bill.

What if I stop subscribing to Sky Digital?
Should you decide to stop subscribing to Sky Digital but still wish to use all the features of Sky+, you will need to start paying the £10 per month Sky+ subscription again. A Sky+ subscription is only free for Sky Digital package subscribers.

How does this affect HD customers?
It doesn’t. Sky HD customers already have the Sky+ subscription charge waived, and will continue to do so after the 1st of July, as with all other Sky Digital subscribers.

Does this mean if I sign up to Sky now as a new customer I will get a free Sky+ box?
No.

If I am a Sky customer but don’t have Sky+, how can I take advantage of this?
From 1st of July if you want Sky+, you can buy a Sky+ box for a one off charge of £99 with a 12 month Sky+ subscription, and an installation charge of £30.

How does this affect multi-room?
The multiroom subscription is unaffected and remains at £10 per month.

Why is Sky doing this?
Many of you have said that you want Sky+, but to get it, it needs to be more affordable. We believe that by removing the Sky+ subscription cost for Sky Digital customers, it will mean that more of you are able to enjoy the benefits of Sky+.

How can I find out more?
If you have any more questions please call the customer services team on 08702 43 24 80.

If you don't ask you don't get - are there any plans to scrap the £10 a month HD box fee for people who subscribe to the top package, as there is no 'special treatment' any more for people who are doing that? If that was the case I would certainly consider upgrading to HD.

How about Freesat 'subscribers'. Can they use the Sky+ features for free if they get their hands on a box?

No it is quite obvious that if you just want sky+ without any mixes then it is £10 per month

As stated by SKY you need to be a subscriber to any pay package, freesat is not a subscription package so if you want SKY+ features then it costs a tenner a month.

It almost makes it worth paying another £5 a month for a two mix package doesn't it

We have a normal sky box downstairs and sky+ upstairs, is that multi room So does that mean we still have to pay the £10 charge? Cheers.

Does this only apply to UK or does it also apply in Ireland as well?

Finally, I can now remove movies and won't end up paying the same either way because of the £10 extra charge. It's about time this happened. Long overdue.

Was the charge only applied if you had the basic package? We've got Movies and Sport and I think I pay £43, take it that wont go down to £33?
Time to cancel sports anyway I think, we only got it for the Ashes, 5 months later and I've still not got rid! Anyone know if you can cancel it over the internet or interactive or do you have to phone up?

Why do you need it when you have the Virgin Media V+

Nope, if you had Movies or Sport or both the £10 was waived. At least now if you take one of them off your subscription won't stay the same, and it will actually go down!

As I've only got one TV in my house, I'd have much rather they removed the £60 installation charge they add on if you don't take out Multiroom at the same time. THAT would tempt me to get Sky+; not removing a £10 charge that I wouldn't have paid anyway cause I'm already on the full package.

Could this be more in response to the BBC ITV Freesat plan with PVR builtin without Subscription????

I think so. I hope they do to Free Satellive TV as Freeview has to Free DTT.

I was one of the very first sky digital customer but I dont really subscribe to sky and dont think I will in the future, even with this change.

I look look forward to FREESAT. I do give credit to Sky for the platform they have built.

From 1st of July if you want Sky+, you can buy a Sky+ box for a one off charge of £99 with a 12 month Sky+ subscription, and an installation charge of £30.
Presumably the bit I have underlined means that you have to commit for 12 months - either you continue paying your existing Sky subscription and consequently your Sky+ sub is free, but if you cancel your existing sub within the 12m period you will pay £10 pm Sky+ sub for the remainder.

The alternative way of reading it is that existing subscribers who want to upgrade to Sky+ still have to pay an additional £10 per month for the first year, effectively making the box £219 not £99.

The 12 month subscription is just so you get the sky+ box for 99 quid rather than full price. You can always buy a box on ebay and install it yourself and then phone up sky to pair the card and the new box and activate sky+

If you have access to a Sky+ box (from whatever "dubious" source) and you have a basic £15 Sky subscription, can you use the PVR functions for free from the 1st July?

If you still have to give Murdoch more money then its hardly much of a deal!!
