Cloverfield/1-18-08

Just wondered if you'd all seen the trailer for that film with no name (referenced to as Cloverfield or more recently 1/18/08) that has been running with Transformers in America?

If you've not heard about it it's produced by JJ Abrams and there is a lot of speculation on the net about what it could actually be about! Here's the trailer...

http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/11808/

...it does look very interesting!

There's also this site...

http://www.1-18-08.com/

...with some very vague photos and there's this site...

http://www.ethanhaaswasright.com/

...which is believed to be linked with the film and the strange puzzle ball unlocks videos. It's well worth checking the Tube of You to see what clues people have found even if some do sound a little far fetched.

Intriguing. Maybe it's a Lost movie about the smoke monster!
Or Ghostbusters 3 - The revenge of Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Or (gag) Godzilla 2.

I like the rumours that it could be a Lovecraft story set in the present day. Shades of The Mist and the camcorder angle has parallells with Romero's idea for Diary of the Dead and (cough, spit) Blair Witch of course.

With the trailer appearing in front of Transformers I assume the end product won't be too adult orientated, however. Shame.

The trailer looks well cool, its been fun reading all the various conspiracy theories that have abounded around this. Personally im hoping for a big screen Lovecraft epic. We will find out more hopefully on August the 1st

This was on Aintitcool.com about 1-18-08:

"JJ Abrams drops Harry a Line on all this 1-18-08 stuff!

Hey folks, Harry here... There's conspiracy theories abounding regarding JJ's little flick to juice us up for his badass STAR TREK recreation. So JJ Abrams wrote me to give us all a clue, cuz we're at square one of this mystery! But note... the game sites apparently have nothing to do with JJ. And also... he seems to be stating that you guys have yet to find all the sites he's put up... and yes, you'll have to find them. The man is laughing at you, me and all of those hiding in the shadows. SO... find em if you can... let us know here at AICN... seems we have a scavanger hunt, ain't it cool?
Dear Sir,

Thanks for your support of our little movie. I can't wait to talk to you more about it -- of course, knowing you, by the time we talk you'll know more than I will.

Regarding the online stuff you posted: yeah, we're doing some fun stuff on the web. But, obviously, if the movie doesn't kick some massive ASS, who gives a rat's about what's online? So as you can imagine, we're focusing mostly on THAT. For what it's worth, the only site of ours that people have even FOUND is the 1-18-08.com site. The others (like the Ethan Haas sites) have nothing to do with us.

Stay cool the rest of the summer -- and thanks per usual for AICN!

JJ"

Very interesting and the trailer does look very good. I cant wait to find out more!

But will the only people who will go and see this film be those who go through the "Cloverfield Experience" and find out things about it, before it is released?

It would've been funny if no one actually cared and the movie was ignored until people knew what it was about.

It does look intriging though.

I don't get the point of the theories and hype behind it. It looks like your run of the mill invasion movie.

The theories and the hype are the point.
It's one of those instances where the marketing for a film has caught people's attention.
Other examples would be "The Blair Witch Project," or "Snakes On A Plane."

Also, it's a JJ Abrams project.

It's such a simple idea but very effective. I didn't know anything about it and saw the trailer on the apple site. The fact it gave nothing away and had no title made me do a quick search on it. It was from there that I found out all this stuff.

Although it hasn't made me want to see the film, it has made me curious to find out what it's about. I've played about on the Ethan Haas site and got to the point where the object has blue dots but can't go further then that.

I wouldnt bother with the ethan haas websites as JJ Abrams has already stated that they have nothing to do with 1/18/08. He said this on Aintitcool.com:

"The others (like the Ethan Haas sites) have nothing to do with us."

Appartently the Ethan Haas websites are to do with a new game being released!

this film looks great from the trailer, its really interesting how a lack of information on the film and the viral publicity has helped this film garner alot of interest.

i cant wait till january now, its not often a trailer gets me interested this far away from release

Some interesting info and possible spoilers here...

http://www.firstshowing.net/2007/07/...nd-set-photos/

and here...

http://wewerethecoolkids.blogspot.co...field-set.html

"J.J. Abrams will be at Comic-Con in the panel from Paramount on Thursday afternoon and a source at SlashFilm has confirmed that the official title will be revealed at that time (or so we really hope). We will be at the panel on-hand to be the first to report all of what J.J. Abrams has to say, and possibly even a new clip from the film."

Looks like this is one of the teaser posters for the film but is MONTROUS the name of the film or is it just a teaser tagline?

Looks like my type of film!

Very early to say but it does give you the feeling it's going to be a monster movie.

Having done a bit of checking around it appears a tune playing in the background is "Joker and the Thief" by Wolfmother is playing, this includes the lyrics...

Can you see the joker flying over,
As she's standing in the field of clover,
Watching out everyday,
I wonder what would happen is he took her away,

My problem with this kind of marketing is that the end product, whatever it may be about, will never be as good as what my imagination will come up with in the meantime. I think it'll have to be jaw-droppingly good to meet my expectations, and I don't think it will be.

What will most likely happen is that I'll find out what it's about when it is released and then, with my curiosity satiated, I'll not bother watching it.
