Do BT Throttle Bittorrent?

I've just noticed that my Utorrent says "Download Limited."
Is that BT's doing? Cheers.

That's not what you asked.

The answer to the thread title is yes.

But that's not why Utorrent says download limited. ISP shaping is transparent to programs like p2p apps. It probably says that because your upload speed is constrained to something quite low.

Thanks Loobster

i think they throttle newsgroup use so wouldn't be surprised if they did the same with torrents

Never really had a problem myself.
I use UseNext for my newsgroups. Download binary and text with very little traffic shaping. Usually download at around 700-800 Kbyte/s (5500Kbps plus) with a sync profile of 7,968 Kbps /448 Kbps during peak times.
Which is better than I get from most websites during the same time.

yes but the reason you dont have a problem is you pay usenext a monthly subsription to access their servers

is tvlinks bitorrent?

Whenever I watch something on tvlinks, my connection drops after about 30 mins. (comes back after about 5 mins)

I am quite surprised at the quality of some of the stuff on tvlinks, on full screen sometimes it is almost DVD quality.
I'm on a 6.5mbps max broadband. (BT unlimited downloads)

Am I hogging BW when I watch these and hence the bt exchange is dropping me?.

or am I thinking of something completly different?

Sounds more like error 4226 to me, which limits the amount of outgoing connections in XP service pack 2 to 10, when that is reached (which often happens with torrents and similar) the machine blocks the connection for several minutes.

There's a patch to increase the limit to 50, just good error 4226 bit torrent patch, or look in your system error log to see if there's an error which is locking the internet.

On the free newsgroups access, it's limited to 3 simultaneous connections rather than the full amount. I get about 170kB/s altogether, around 50kB/s on each connection. It doesn't matter what time of day it is though, I get that speed regardless, so I prefer using newsgroups to torrents these days. BT's throttling on torrents is pathetic.

I have been very fortunate with UseNext, I pay with Paypal and purchase 100GB at a time. I seem to have been lucky because my download balance hasn't been reset at the start of every month so I just keep downloading until i've used my allowance then purchase some more again.

same here, I've just started getting into newsgroups in the last month or two because it doesn't seem to get ruined by bt's throttling the same as all the p2ps i use.

You will find most ISP's throttle P2P or torrents nowadays,

In fact most throttle any heavy user mot just torrents and P2P. To my knowledge BT are the only ones who specificaly target P2P and Torrents.

For that reason you may find that newsgroups work if you are with BT, but may still be throttled on other providers.

BT also seem to be throttling all p2p however low your overall usage - are they unique in this?

BT are quite open regarding their policy to restrict P2P speeds in the Usage Allowance Guidelines and Fair Usage Policy.

Relevant sections are as follows:

Peer to Peer (P2P)

11. What is BT's policy on P2P?

P2P is the sharing of files and programs between groups of people who are logged on to a P2P network. It consumes a significant and highly disproportionate amount of bandwidth even when it’s being used by just a small number of customers.
Because of this, we restrict P2P speeds if it's having a negative impact on the online experience of the majority of our customers. We normally place restrictions in the evenings at peak time, but we do apply them during the day if a lot of customers are using P2P at the same time.
Without these limits all our customers using their broadband service would suffer, regardless of whether they are using P2P or not. It’s important to remember that P2P can be used at any time, and even when restrictions are applied it is not restricted completely, so is always available to use.

12. Does this mean I can't use Peer-to-Peer (P2P) applications?

No, we are not stopping you from using any P2P service. P2P will just be slowed down in the evenings and during the day if a lot of customers are using it.

It's not actually crap, but just that you yourself have to figure out what they mean. They count on people not knowing what they mean, or, taking what they say totally wrongly. It's all about looking at the bigger picture
