Anyone had Alcoholic Hepatitis?

I had an attack of this about 6 weeks ago and it left me extremely unwell with nausea, extreme tiredness and soreness in the Liver area.

It was a shock as it happened suddenly, I just woke up one day in a cold sweat feeling awful (I hadn't had a drink the night before), then it got worse for around 10 days despite me completely stopping drinking (I am male, 36 and had been drinking around 30-35 units a week for a few years.) then over the last 4 weeks it has steadily improved.

I was wondering if anyone else has had this and whether they have been able to recover to anything like full health again afterwards? The whole episode has scared the **** out of me tbh.

No, (well not yet), but right now, I am itching for a beer, and I think my count tonight is near eight units.

Not that in my medical experience it would help, but what type of alcohol were you doing in those years ?
Beers
Alcopops
Wine
Spirits
Homebrew
Home distill ?

Not surprised it scared you!

I've not had that personal experience but your GP could perhaps do a liver function test and give you information and advice specific to you. Also the British Liver Trust have a good selection of leaflets. On the positive side the liver is pretty good at repairing itself if given a fighting chance and Alcoholic Hepatitis CAN reverse if you stay alcohol free and look after yourself, but continued drinking often leads to a progression of the damage.

For medical advice though - see the GP

Good luck

oooh and whilst I'm thinking of it, be wary of other things which spank the liver such as paracetamol, etc.

I'm not giving you medical advice, only your Dr can do that but it is worth bearing in mind

Mostly strongish Cider (Scrumpy Jack/Westons) and beer (Becks/Grolsch) No spirits or wine

Usually around 10-12 units 3 nights a week from age 27 until I gave up (aged 36), and from aged 18-26 probably averaging under 25 units a week.

So not exactly massive amounts but well over the 21 unit guideline, plus I ended up a few stone overweight which increases the risk.

Hi, I haven't had a drink for 7 weeks now and it does seem to be starting to improve. My blood test done 6 weeks ago was abnormal (my GP said the results weren't what he'd expect from alcohol damage though) and I have to go for another one this week which I'm hoping will be a bit better.

No signs of severe damage so far though (yellow eyes, jaundice, water retention, spider veins etc.)

No problems keeping off the booze so far and have been eating well (loads of fruit and veg etc)

Thanks for the advice, 6 months on I'm feeling pretty much recovered apart from occasional slight discomfort in my mid right abdomen, all the other symptoms went around November.

I had a clean ultrasound result, tbh I think the problem may have been gallbladder related rather than liver.

I am currently having abnormal liver function tests......am due the result of latest one next week.. mine is now due to alcohol, though and liver scan has said everything OK. Still concerning me though.

Glad you are feeling better.
