UKTV Gold is in widescreen!

Just channel hopping and discovered they're showing Spiceworld in proper, anamorphic widescreen!

The other UKTV channels are still in 4:3, though.

....looks like they have already, sort of. Meant to be 31st Jan when UKTV goes widescreen. Looks like things have been brought forward. Or, perhaps this is just an initial test.

I'm getting the Spice Girls film in widescreen too on cable. But the ads are still in 4:3 at the moment.

I'd say more of a test as there is no "W" on the banner, although not all channels use the banner.

Many channels don't use it so it's no indication of whether this is a test or the real thing. Maybe it's just for films. It will be interesting to see if anything else is in widescreen and not just the film.

Aren't the Virgin Media channels due to go widescreen on 1st February? Could be an early test.

All flextech channels are going widescreen from 31st January. I suppose this is just a one off or maybe all films on UK Gold will be widescreen from now on?

....no.

UKTV Gold+1 has the widesreen Spice Girls film too, except it's not actually broadcasting it in widescreen. So, the film is being broadcast in the wrong ratio.

Edit: Ok, an intermittent widescreen signal is being broadcast on +1. So clearly these are tests. Strange time to do them....

Edit, Edit....ok, I'll get it right this time.

The film on +1 is widescreen and being broadcast in widescreen. But, UKTV Gold +1 are not sending the signal (yet) for tvs to automatically switch to the widescreen ratio.

Yep All they need to do is sort the adverts out, still in 4:3.

So, perhaps the UKTV channels go full widescreen on Nov 31st instead of Jan 31st??

Any chance of getting a new calendar? Most of the ones that I have seen only give 30 days for November!

I just watched Spiceworld on UKTV Gold +1 (Sky Digital, channel 110)

The movie was in anamorphic widescreen, but the flag had been set to 14:9 The first time I've ever seen that used on Sky (I guess it must just be the testing phase)

Dancing With the Stars 8pm episode is in anamorphic widescreen on UKTV Gold (109) and - thankfully - has the correct flag set

EDIT: The +1 version of the same episode is in anamorphic widescreen, but has the flag set to 14:9

Also, the 4:3 flag keeps being hammered out constantly throughout adverts (I'm getting on-screen graphics from my TV notifying me of the "change" - even when my TV was on 4:3 anyway )

'Dancing with the stars' is in widescreen on Top UP TV (terrestrial) from where I am! (Redruth Tx).
Nice to see the UKGold logo with some space around it!

It isn't here DVB. Lovely 16:9 anamorphic from Redruth Tx.
Obvious question, but are you sure your TV has gone into auto switching for your Thompson Box. I sometimes have to 'force' mine to switch to 16:9, particularly on downloads.
Auto switching is always fine on the TV's in-built Freeview tuner (which obviously doesn't have UK Gold).
Ah, one of the other threads say that the auto-switching signal has not been switched on yet.

Last edited by tinminer : 30-11-2007 at 21:32. Reason: auto-switching signal.....

I'm currently using my Matsui thing in my bedroom, and it's stretchy

Oh well I'll put it down to the Matsui box then.

I wish Al Jazeera International would use the 14:9 Flag, that channel has excellent presentation and production, but just seems to float in the middle of the screen!
