Looks like 4mb users won't be too happy, their reduced speed will be the same as if they were on the lowest tier.

Other than that, it's a bit of an improvement on the current STM, less hours and only one triggering per day.

I should be happy as I rarely use my conection before 9pm, I still find something dishonest about the whole management thing though.

Yeah i'm in the same boat as you, it doesn't affect me at all, as i do my downloading on newsgroups after midnight, but the principle sucks, especially when they are saying things like 'we don't believe in saving money for the sake of it' - it's like a shifty 2nd hand car salesman telling you the 30 year old ford you're about to buy was only used by a little old woman to get her pension once a week.

M users are being shafted where the sun don't shine even more with this one! Down to 300Mb download. That is somehow "significantly" damaging other customers usage? 300Mb!!! I call BS on that.

And another thing. Why do they measure usage based in music files, which are some of the smallest files. Instead of telling me I can download thousands of music files, how about being more honest and telling me I can download half a movie before I am being accused of damaging the network, or a third of a game demo. Grr......

They had to get the extra 50MB that L users are getting from somewhere.

These changes just show that the majority of users are on the M & L packages. Lets hope the speed upgrades next year are worth the wait.

The average size of a single music track on my system is 10MB so that blows their calculations right out of the water.

Hmmmm.... a rough calculation seems to say that my p2p uploading will trigger STM for me at about 6:30pm, just as I get home, and be in effect until about 11:30pm when I go to bed.

Great

Slight improvement for me, as I generally haven't downloaded 300 meg by 9pm. Bit of a p*sser about the reduction in the limit, though. As 300 meg is about 30 minutes of TV programme on 4OD, my viewing habits may alter......

Is that 3gb in a month, or in any one time slot?
(with reference to the restrictions on XL customers)

Shocking.

This will last for 5 hours from when the traffic management policy is applied, the data used to trigger traffic management is then reset. In some circumstances you could have to wait until 2am before your speed returns to normal, if STM was triggered at 8:59pm.
As someone who's never been STM'd more than once a night, that sucks.

Limit your upload speed then or don't run your p2p program during 4-9pm

So 4 hours increases to 5 hours but the time frame has reduced from midnight to 9pm.

Happy enough with that to be fair.

Nick.

Don't forget that now uploading is added into the equation

The article suggests 3GB between 4pm and 9pm rather than in 24 hours.

It will be you and others like you that they are trying to 'manage'.. This how they are able to throttle P2P use without blocking ports.

Yes this is the VM peak period but VM use a 24 hour period for STM calculations i.e. all data is reset every 24 hours.

Don't forget that if you trigger STM at 8:59pm you'll still be STM'd until 1:59am the next day.

Uploading is a separate threshold.. i.e. On XL you can download 3GB and Upload 1.25GB before you get hit.. Whichever limit you hit first you get the same penalty.

It is about time they got us up to Japanese speeds. I am sick of us being the poor man of Europe.

That is not correct.. The monitoring period starts at 1600. So at that point Bytes are counted until such time that the threshold is reached and STM kicks in. Obviously with the new policy by the time you come out of STM the monitoring window will have closed and any Byte Counters are cleared.

Your triggering scenario is correct though.. But is worst case isnt it? i.e. Under the old policy you could be under STM until 0400 if you triggered at 2359

The drop to 1Mb for L users as well as M users is a little pants.

Does anyone know what the STM policy for those on the 10Mb trial is?
