I've never tried playing MKV via Tversity, as I think you'd have to be broadcasting at a fairly high bitrate to make it worthwhile, I've only ever converted them into 720p MP4 using PS3Video9, got perfect results that way, although it takes some time.

How long does it take to convert then mate roughly? And is the video 9 a free program? I take it you then put the mp4 on to a blank dvd using Nero?

PS3 video 9 is free and the best program I have found for getting x264.mkv video files into a PS3 format.

In Video 9 there is an option called mkv pass through which will change your video into a PS3 format in about 10minutes, it doesnt actually convert the video but makes some changes so the PS3 can read them, this works for 90% of the videos I have ran through it. It does still convert the audio though and removes any multi channel sound the original file might have and converts them to 160kbps stereo format.

You can get them into your PS3 via a blank DVD as you suggest, or via a number of other methods like USB pen drives, USB HDD, Memory Stick, SDCard or over a network with software like TVersity.

I have found a small number of files that either have problems converting the audio with the mkv pass through feature or files that seem to convert fine but when played back on the PS3 just have a black screen, these sadly need to go through a lengthy conversion which will then make them playable.

Sorry if this is off-topic ... hopefully it won't be ... but is there any chance someone could post an idiot's guide to the file formats that'll play hi-def content onto the PS3 ?

I'm guessing that DIVX files won't support hi-def but .mp4 will. Am I right ?

What's MKV ?!

MKV is the Matroska container and is often used with the new x264 codec for high def rips. x264 is the new Xvid as it has great quality with a small file size and handles HD resolutions very well.

The PS3 will play HD files in *.mp4 format and some *.mpg videos.

I have yet to try a HD Xvid so I dont know if they will play or not.

Alternatively, do a search for a lovely little utility called mkv2vob on the doom9 forums.

I'd add a link but unsure if linking to other forums would be considered to be bad etiquette.

You could always do this which is fine, because you're not linking to anywhere other than Google.

Lately I have started using GOTSent to change *.mkv files into PS3 readable files, it has a greater success rate than PS3 Video 9 but still has the same issue of converting the audio to stereo.

This is also a very handy program and one I have found useful for films because it is able to handle large files unlike PS3 video 9. The main problem I have found with this though is the resulting *.vob file is slightly larger than the source file so can create problems when burning to a disc. I have got around this issue by using mkvmergeGUI to cut the credits off the film I am going to convert which reduces the file size enough to make the file that mkv2vob spits out fit onto a disc.

The only other issue with this method is that the resulting *.vob file seems unplayable in anything other than the PS3, unlike the *.mp4 files PS3 video 9 or GOTSent output which are still playable on a PC.

quicktime pro - export - mp4 - choose 'video pass through' very quick, saves it as a mp4. which is playable - BUT some arent - trying to figure out - think the ps3 cant read over 4Mbps - the film that wont play is 5+Mbps - whereas the stuff that will play is 2-3MBps so think this is the prob...

I use a Program called TSMuxer.

Input MKV, Output MTS2, Click convert, One minute later the file is done and ready for the PS3, it doesn't touch the audio or video so you get no quality loss it just re-arranges the codec wrapper into the Blu-ray style, the PS3 can already play MP4 it's just a matter of the wrapper.

Get mkv2vob, very good program and i would not bother streaming them instead copy them to your ps3, i find they play much better. Im pretty sure streaming large files thru a wirless router can be a pain in the ass for some people

I use wmp 11 with k- lite codec pack, so then you have not got to install any thing else to stream over the file.

Im sure there are people who will say wireless is fine, but in my trail and error , with mkv files the set up i stated above give's me hassle free blu rau films playng spot on

Google the following programs.

1. MKVtoVOB
2. PS3 media server.

Download them both and install them. You might have to add Java to your PC as well.

Using MKVtoVOB, convert your MKV files and their sound if need be. You don't have to convert them but they run 100% if you do. If you don't convert them then your system may struggle streaming 1080P files.

Use PS3 media server on your PC to stream the file to your PS3. Really easy and so much better than other programs out there.

Don't use your internet connecting whilst streaming either.

Enjoy!

Similar to GazP, but i use Tversity, Mkv2vob using

Output Mpg
Video Transcode- Automatic
Transcoding Codec - X264 (Slow)
output type - File

If you dont have a DTS audio player do always transcode DTS,
If you do and you get static on ps3, set your volume to Normal (0) and should work.

+1 for this method.

tried them all and this is the fastest and doesnt recode the video. just repackages in a mpg container the PS3 can read.

I agree, I use PS3 Media Server and rarely have any problems with it. I don't convert MKV files beforehand I just stream them direct from my PC over Wi-Fi to my PS3 and they play with 5.1 audio if available. There is a setting in PS3 Media Server for HD Wi-Fi transcoding. I do suggest that you Google "PS3 Media Server Revision 356" for a good stable release and a user guide from the same website. It also tends to work better on Windows Vista and Windows 7 if you 'Run as Administrator'.
