Now Phil Redmond wants to axe Grange Hill

http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008...television.bbc

Very surprising that Phil Redmond would himself say this as, until now, he had always vowed for the show to carry on "as long as children were going to school".

But with the changes to CBBC I can well understand how he feels (if indeed he really said that).

BTW do you know when the new "watered down" series of Grange Hill is coming to the CBBC channel ?

Also are some of the main characters returning or will they be getting younger ones ?

It has been watered down since it moved from Elstree.

Grange Hill lost its edge once Mrs McClusky retired and the set moved to Campus Manor. It became an odd and illogical mix of southern and northern characters. It was meant to set in North London, not Childwall, Liverpool!

Yes, both GH and the BBC long lost the plot. Axe them both!

Such a shame - Grange Hill was a great show in its heyday, even up the mid 90s. I will remember it fondly as a show which I watched not only with my sister when we were younger, but also with my parents who appreciated the fact that it was so well-written, relevant and involving. I have a feeling we will never see its like again.

Well it seems that Grange Hill has been axed as the new direction sounds like a completely different show anyway. Just a shame it won't have a proper finale before changing style.

I saw Phil Redmond on tv the night that Liverpool had its European city of thingummy opening night and Ringo did a gig. He was being interviewed. (Phil R, not Ringo).

If he thinks that hairstyle is anything other than absolutely ridiculous and laughable then his opinion isn't worth a penny any more. I'd NEVER appear in public looking like that. Even if I was as rich as Redmond is reputed to be!

Yeah that would be great! They did repeat it years ago on bbc2 on Sundays I think but that stopped Wish they could repeat them - all the way through though, I want to see the Zammo story again!

Series 1-4 are out on DVD. I hope they continue so I can get the Zammo drugs season and a few either side.

It's not Grange Hill that's lost the plot but the CBBC, with its new policy of catering for 6-12s only. So whereas last year we got storylines about underage pregnancies, a popular pupil dying suddenly and the shockwaves it sent through the school, this year we're getting riveting storylines about lost puppies and fantasy sequences about a boy who dreams he is a skateboarding champion. Lost the plot? Of course it has.

As to this business about it moving away from the school to a new place called "The Grange" - news to me and in a way what they tried to do with Crossroads (the long-term plan was to move it away from the hotel/motel and re-name it "King's Oak", but the show was axed before this could happen).

Before you commit to buy, bear in mind that the interior VT scenes have been given a "filmic look" so are not as broadcast.

Phil Redmond knackerd Brookside by making it one long political rant via Jimmy Corkhill. Phil is a "rebel" stuck in the 1980's. Move on Phil time to knacker Hollyoaks next.

Phil is no longer directly involved in the making of Hollyoaks.

Which is not only surprising but a shame - he needs to sort out the mess that Bryan Kirkwood has made of it.

Is there anything on this earth that pleases you?

You must be very good at whatever it is you to do cast so much criticism at everyone else!

And his haircut has what bearing on his capabilities as a TV producer, exactly?

His head, he can do what he likes with it. What a ridiculous post.

Such a mess that in most people's view it's improved a hell of a lot over the last year or so and the viewing figures and now very healthy indeed.

Are you serious? The general consensus is that the show is currently better than it has ever been.

There is no doubt that Hollyoaks, when it gets things right, does things well. The eating disorder storyline is one of the best they've ever done and all involved deserve lasting success.

However, some feel that for short-term ratings gain, Kirkwood has made Hollyoaks into a UK version of The OC and has skewed it towards the teenage girls who would be watching that show. This is a notoriously fickle audience who'll only stay with the show a certain time before getting bored with it and moving on, and will not bring long-term followers to Hollyoaks.

This also seems to be reflected in the show's current cast list - most of the currently popular characters have been in the show no longer than three years, with the longest serving female only there since 2000. The impending departure of OB suggests Mr Kirkwood would get rid of the "old guard" of Tony, Max & co if he could.

It's not such a surprise that he's disappointed with the direction of the show. To have your creation taken from you and båstardised is not such a pleasant experience.

Phil Redmond was never happy with the direction Grange Hill was taking in the late 1990s/early 2000s under BBC stewardship so he masterminded the deal for Mersey TV to take over production. Ironically at the time it was he who felt GH was aiming for "too old an audience" and wanted to take it back to the 8-11s and a new "Tucker and Benny generation".

Though things were never the same, Grange Hill has steadily improved in terms of content and last year's series went right back to the teenage audience. It is now the BBC who are insisting it's made for younger children and how they want it made goes far and beyond what Phil Redmond himself was proposing back in 2002. So if he's saying that Grange Hill has now "served its purpose", I must agree with him.
