Angel: Doyle Appreciation Thread

Ah, do you remember way back in the first series of Angel, that cute little Irishman who almost won Cordelia's heart? To me, he's the unsung hero of the buffy/Angelverse. I understand that some people may not like him, but I thought he was great, especially in his final episode Hero.

I also loved the nod to Doyle in the fifth series with Cordelia re-watching the video tape Doyle made. A little tribute to the late Glenn Quinn methinks.

Didn't know he had died, that's sad.

Yeah, he died about a year or so after Series 1 of Angel. Well around that time anyway. Think he died of a heart attack.

I liked the character, thought he was great, shame he was only in it for half of the season.

He died in December 2002, of a heroin overdose. Very sad.

I think Doyle was loved by all fans of the show. He was a great energy on screen and a real friend to Angel unlike wesley who betrayed him or Gunn and Fred who weren't in it for Angel all the way. It was really touching that they remembered him on the 100th episode special.

Glenn was only in around 9 episodes because of his drug problem. Maybe if they had supported him and got him to rehab instead of getting another actor things would have turned out better for him.

That's not true at all.

Joss had always planned to kill off Doyle, once the audience had become attached to him - to indicate that the stakes were somewhat higher on Angel that they were on Buffy.

He'd tried the 'kill off a mate' thing far too early on Buffy, when he killed off Jesse in episode two.

He had also planned to bring him back in Season 5, (prior to his real life death) - but marked that fact not only with the video reference in Episode 100, but also by the fact that Lindsay passed himself off as 'Doyle', to Spike.

As for him being kicked off the show due to his drug problem, that's a load of rot - as I distinctly recall at the time of his death, everybody wno knew him (David Boreanez, his family, co-workers) etc expressed surprise that he was involved with drugs at all, let alone to the degree it became evident he was, only after his death.

He was also Mark on "Roseanne."
Pretty good american accent, as I had no idea at the time that he grew up in Ireland.
He was talented; they did a show about him on the E! channel here in America, it was an episode of "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams."

David Fury (Angel producer) on killing off Doyle:

Fury also confirmed what many suspected: The death of Doyle (Glenn Quinn) on "Buffy" spin-off "Angel" last season was not planned from the start of the series.

"Joss has bandied about, 'I love the idea of putting a character in the main credits as one of the stars of the show and then kill him right off the bat.' But in the case of Doyle, he didn't want to kill off Doyle. It just became a situation. The work situation became difficult... It's hard enough to make a television show without the headaches."

Make of that what you will.

I prefer to believe the story about Doyle's death being planned from the start but sadly it doesnt look like it was true.

Loved Doyle, Im Irish myself and it thought was great to have an Irish guy on an American TV series who wasnt a stereotype.

I remember when "Hero" first aired everyone was sure he would be back next week or back before the end of the Season but as time went on it looked more & more unlikely. I absolutely hated Whedon for doing it I even resented Wes because of it (cool Doyle had been replaced by that idiot from Buffy!) but looking back now I think it was a great move as it shaped the whole series.

It meant great things for my fav character - Cordy. Could you imagine how different Angel & Cordy's story would have been if Doyle hadnt died. And it was an event like Doyle's death that made Angel & Cordy's friendship & eventual love all the more interesting & deep.

I loved Doyle, I think everyone did and it was shocking that they killed him off I always hoped that he would be back until sadly Glenn died.

People have said it was because he was on drugs that he was written out but I dont know how true that is, I think that it was geniuenely the plan all along - people forget that Joss was a writer on Rosanne - he had probably known Glenn for a few years maybe even had him in mind to play Doyle from the beginning. David Boreanaz and Glenn and Christain Kane (who played Lindsay) were all really good friends in real life, I think if drugs had been the problem they would have rallied around him, not just decided to write him out with barely a chance to sort himself out. I remember David being asked about his death in an interview and him being unable to talk about it cause he was 'still greiving for his friend'

At the end of the episode Long Day's Journey in season 4 before the end credits, the episode is tributed to Glenn Quinn, as it was the first to air after his death.

It was nice when they watched the tape of him in 'Your welcome' and all the mentions of him in season 5.

you have to remember that Joss has a thing for killing off sympathetic characters - and showing the impact it has on everyone around them.

Tara in Buffy? Wash in Serenity? I prefer to think that Doyle's death was something that was planned from the beginning, it never felt rushed or tacked on, it was all part of Doyle accepting the demon part of himself.

Doyle was a great character - it's such a pity he died in the 8th episode

I remember that was the first time "Angel" gripped me, especially when Cordelia found out Doyle was a half-demon, was shocked, but still followed it up with "So are you going to ask me out to dinner or what?"
His sacrifice is very potent too

I only recently found out that Glenn Quinn had died actually - I googled "drug overdose actor" to find out about Heath Ledger, and it came up with a story about Glenn's death
