Five News with Natasha Kaplinsky

Now I've not seen Five News for a good few years so I've no idea what it's normally like, but I thought I'd watch today anyway. And it's awful. It's so tacky and they've lead on some story about a banned driver. There wasn't even a mention of Northern Rock!

Has it always looked/been this tacky?

I was absolutely stunned... it was so so bad.
The lead story could have been created anytime in the last ten years... it was nonsense.
The rest of the show was seriously bland and not even as good as newsroom. They'll lose hundreds of thousands of viewers guaranteed.. especially when they're up against Richard and Judy and ITV programmes.

the presenter looked like a blob of makeup smudged onto a sofa.

Its on again at 7 so it will probably get smashed even further up against The One Show (and the bit I seen today I think five news is similar to) and Emmerdale as well as the news on 4.

At least they have a functioning studio, more than what can be said for BBC News 24 (dire set that is falling to pieces). BBC News 24/BBC Nationals get their brand new studio/set/titles/graphics which includes a full rebrand, next month (end of March). Will be interesting to see the comparison and to see if the BBC make any effort to plug the new look.

It beats the current cheap-looking News 24/BBC National News Sets (although since the National's have been in TC7 it is a little better). Be nice to see the new BBC News studio.

Talk about five news wanting to start a conversation. So five news, or should I say five no-news, or should it ever have the right to be called a news programme. It's more like a gossup than a news.

Hence why I said ITV News at Ten isn't under the ITV brand. I mean the generic ITV News ie lunchtime, evening, weekends etc.

sounds awful

meanwhile what I came in here to say, is that im fed up with five news changing every couple of years, I know five have to carry news, but im not sure its ever going to compete with BBC & ITV.

and anyone who uses the term "start a conversation" is a massive turn off for me, I want a news read to present facts, maybe a little discussion with experts, but not mass discussion.

Ha! I doubt they will lose many viewers to Richard and bloody Judy.

And, I went on the Five News website and there is NO NEWS,at all whatsoever. It is just all blog entries by Natasha Kaplinksky and co.

well, i thought it was ok. i'm happy with a synopsis of stories rather than in depth stuff that's available on c4.

also how many of us are affected by Northern Rock and how many of us are affected by uninsured drivers - so i know which story was more relevant to me the girl on the street.

thought the set was a bit big and that couch was way too long and she looked a bit lost on it.

as for natasha she did a great job - as always.

great piece by Amanda Platell on the daily mail website today, totally ripping Kraplinsky apart.

Yes there was - but you probably hadn't seen it because the programme had only been on for four minutes before you posted to complain!

I thought it was OK. Certainly too much "non-news" for my liking but that's no different to 99% of the rest of TV news in this country, sadly...

The fact that you appear to think that you are unaffected by Northern Rock shows why there needs to be coverage of it! The failure of a bank could have serious knock-on effects within the banking industry, and ttaking the bank into public ownership has increased Government debt markedly and has exposed the taxpayer to a possible risk should the whole thing collapse. It could also have a major effect on the fortunes of this Government, as well as its fortunes in the next election.

It IS important, even if it is not immediately apparent in everyday life

Oh haha. Is the normal ITV News set in that same green room then? I still think it's pretty good tbh.

It should've been on the headlines though tbf - it is pretty massive news, especially today. It wasn't mentioned for a good 15 minutes or so.

All I have to say about the news programme is 'newsround'.

It was awful.

What happened to the jeans and t-shirt though??

Not that this kind of news appeals to me, but let me play the devil's advocate for a moment:

Britain has a very diverse printed press, ranging from the populist to the fairly high-brow. People who read, say, the Guardian may dislike the tabloids and poke fun at them, but they generally accept their existence.

So why is a populist news service on television such a big deal? In today's TV environment, people have a choice of channels, and the BBC provides a service that is generally regarded as one of the journalistically most sound in the world. So why shouldn't Five take a populist approach?

If people can buy tabloid newspapers, why shouldn't they have access to populist TV news?
