A thread for Non League fans

There are quite a few threads dedicated to the bigger teams on DS. I was wondering though, if there are any other supporters of their local sides, usually non league.

I support Gateshead FC (it's where I'm from) and we are having a great season at the moment. We've all but thrown away winning the Unibond Premier but are firmly in the play offs. A win against Fleetwood this afternoon should see us second.

So, away from the glitz and glamour, are there any other non league fans on here?!

I wouldn't go as far as calling myself a fan but when Celtic aren't playing I do try and go to a Highland League match.

I'm away to see Inverurie Loco Works vs Buckie Thistle today. 3rd vs 2nd in the league.

Forest Green Rovers fan here. Our chances of getting to the playoffs are almost over now after losing to Cambridge today. Stuart Fleetwood hasn't scored this year and thats been our downfall lately. Wish we'd have sold him now.

Although I'm an Arsenal fan for my sins, I do go regularly to see my local non-league side, Three Bridges. They play in the Sussex County League Division One (step five, for you lofty Conference fans ), and are currently seventh. Went today to see them win 5-2 against Hailsham Town. Good match.

That's a bit pricey for a non-league team isn't it?

You get season tickets in the Bundesliga and Serie A for less than that.

As for myself, Inverurie beat Buckie 2-0 to go 2nd in the Highland League.

Funnily enough there was an article in the Observer a while back comparing our prices with Juve, and making the same point

We managed to double our normal attendance yesterday (to 2600+), by handing out vouchers to all the local schools/clubs etc that entitled under 16s to free admission for the game
They had to bring their parents of course, and buy food/programme/merchandise - must have made quite a bit extra!

I keep a close eye on FC United. They drew yesterday 0-0 with Bamber Bridge and currently lie 7th in the Unibond League Division 1 North but have like 5 games in hand over all the teams above them.

Obviously they'll never eclipse my beloved Stockport County, but I do have a soft spot for Conference South* side Eastleigh FC, also known as The Spitfires

*Blue Sq. Lower Division South Conference or whatever it calls itself these days

I'm a fan of FC Clacton, we play in the first division of the Jewson (eastern) league.
£70 for a season ticket.

Cool, another step five fan. Three Bridges, the local non-league team that I regularly see, charge £50 for a season ticket, which works out at about £2 a game, if you count all the cup matches, etc.

BTW, kudos to the one who first started this thread. Something that should have been done long ago.

We were step four last year but suffered relegation. There is an outside chance we might slip into the third promotion place but it looks unlikely.

Dont know about you but I much prefer this level of football over the 'league' stuff.
Cheap to get in, have a couple of beers with your mates ( even during the game) and everyone seems to know everyone where as if you were at a premiershp game you are just one of many thousand people.

Non league...you cant beat it !!

Although I still support Arsenal and did go regularly to see them in the late seventies and during the eighties (nearly all the home games and London and SE away), league football has changed so much that it's not exactly the game I went to see in my youth. The game isn't just distant in the money scale (I wouldn't pay the prices on principle, even if I could afford them), but the type of fan who goes tends to be the sort that I would have no real patience for (not all, because there are loads of fans who, unlike me, have continued to support their club by still putting their hands in their deep pockets and going to the matches, but I bet many of them feel similar, too).

Non-league football might not have the skills and glamour of the Premiership, but being at a live game, no matter at what level, is way better than sitting on your sofa and watching it on TV, which I find a bit sterile. Many on this board will laugh at anyone who goes to watch non-league over watching a Premiership match on TV (particularly in the lower non-league leagues), but then again, the laugh's really on them for thinking that football on TV is the real deal. You can stick your Sky up your backside for all I care, because real football is out there where it rains and where you can see beyond the scope of your TV screen.

Mind you, here's a question that might get some more activity on this thread. Does anyone feel that FC United supporters took the easy option of forming their own club because of their dislike of some US chairman, instead of going to support their already existing local non-league teams, many of who would have welcomed their attendance and support? Was it the right thing to form FC United or should such disgruntled Man Utd fans have gone to support Altrincham or maybe some step five club in the area (or maybe Guildford City when in Surrey )? I know someone is going to mention AFC Wimbledon, but I do think that that's a bit different, seeing the club was moved eighty miles away from their traditional support, and not just simply taken over by another chairman.

Chelmsford appear to have the Ryman league tital sewn up. They've got all the old Canvey players and management from when the Canvey team disbanded in the Conference due to poor crowds and they look like going upto Conference South. Only AFC Wimbledon and Horsham (games in hand after their cup run which ended at Swansea in round 2) can catch them, and thats if Chelmsford fall apart (well they did lose 4-0 at home to the second bottom club a fortnight ago which was unbelieveable).

Kettering set to go upto the top tier of non league.

Team Bath going well too.

Justin Edinburgh sacked by Grays this week I hear. He was cheering on Spurs today. Grays got a good point at Stevenage who apppear to be faltering, and have probably blown a title fight now.

How did your teams get on this weekend?

We drew 1-1 in a game we should have won.

I'm afraid now that we have thrown away second place. A four point gap behind a team that seem unstoppable.

FC United drew 2-2 with Bamber Bridge in a game they could have done with winning. Can't believe even though this is a non league thread someone still had to have a dig at Man United.
