Yap Yap Rabbit Rabbit

I'm slightly scared. Rabbit recently appeared on Ofcom's licence page, looking like some sort of Teletext-operated teleshopping channel.

Anybody know about this?

Rabbit is really there! Wasn't there a Teletext Shopping licence once upon a time?

Maybe Teletext have bagged the extra 1Mbps from SDN on Mux A.

They were threatening to increase Teletext Holidays and Teletext Cars could do with an improvement.

Or it might just be the Playboy Channel.

Yes, in fact this may well be a straight rename of that as the page name indicates it has been there a while.

Somebody said Teletext Shopping was shelved, and this doesn't have the Teletext branding. Must be a joint venture, or a Quiz Call-style "we don't want to associate ourselves with this" approach.

I doubt it, SDN are still inviting proposals up to next week!

I see today that Teletext have handed back the license for Teletext Cars, so I would presume that Rabbit will replace Teletext Cars.

That Teletext cars License refers to satellite & cable.

Rabbit replaced Teletext Shopping

So when the service was live, it was broadcast without a license? Or were they broadcasting under the Teletext Shopping license, but didn't change the Service Name?

Either of these would be no-nos.

There was never a License for UKTV Bright Ideas...it was believed they used the UKTV Style license, which was renamed to UK Home Style

I think all the "unlicensed channels" were on an annex to another licence. For instance Teletext and UKTV may have had several services all on one licence. These don't appear to be accessible by the general public.

As far as Teletext Cars is concerned, this used to be a service but now is just a front page for Teletext Extra as it has a bit rate inconsistent with a static caption. I don't see any reason why Teletext Extra can't be a hidden channel like the Thomson Download channel.

Teletext to release Rabbit on Freeview

Quote:
Teletext is to launch an interactive dating service on Freeview next month.

The service, called Rabbit, will allow users to set up profiles with pictures sent in by mobile phone. A spokeswoman said the service was not replacing any others and would be carried on Multiplex A, operated by ITV subsidiary SDN.

Hmm in post #3, I wondered if this would be using the 1Mbps recently put up for rent by SDN on Mux A. Can't see where else the bandwidth could come from.

Double hmmm.... the DS link updated 15.16 now says it's on Multiplex 2 replacing Teletext Cars???

Looks like Teletext Cars has been a placeholder for LCN102 so Teletext didn't lose the slot.

It wont have much of a bit rate then. Each photo will take 30 secs or more to load I bet.

So it is going to replace Teletext Cars after all. I wonder if the Teletext Extra service will still be "behind" 102 as well.

Seriously?

I would expect mobile phone pictures to load in pretty quick on 1Mb/s.

Large images were not that slow on old dial-up services.

The BBC Testcard W (MHEG "Easter Egg") takes a long time to download but that is fullscreen, much higher resolution than the typical mobile phone screen. Therefore a mobile phone image - rescaled to the lowest common denominator - would take only a few seconds at most.

It's not using ITV's spare 1Mbps (mux A), it's just replacing Teletext Cars on multiplex 2.

On a slightly related note: Does anyone remember the high-quality Kylie Minogue images that The Hits Xtra carried one day? There was a different (full screen) picture every hour, and I seem to remember it taking an age to load on our first Freeview box!

Bozz

Teletext Cars is about 42kbps with a dodgy 32kbps audio channel at the moment according to XOR.

Yeah sorry, grabbed the wrong end of the stick.

Still, mobile phone pics are pretty low quality and should load ok.
