2008 DS Ratings Prediction Game: Season 2

Welcome to Season 2 of the DS Ratings Prediction Game!

ANYONE can play this game- even if you missed season 1, because EVERYONE will start with 0 points. Many of you already have played in season 1 and know the rules. But for people who didn't play in season 1, here are the rules below:

Rules
It is very simple. Every week you will have to predict the ratings to 10 shows selected by myself. I'll try and select different types of shows to give a variety. If you have suggestions pm me. You will need to submit your predictions on the thread by a certain date which I will specify. As sometimes not all the actual ratings are reported, there will be 5 backup ratings. They will only be used if not all the actual ratings are provided. There will be an order for the backup ratings, so if needed they will be used in that particular order. Backup ratings will also be used to position people with the same main points (a bit like goal difference in football).

After we find out the actual ratings, each person will be given points for every show. The points system will work as following:

5 points= predicted rating is exactly the same as the actual rating
3 points= predicted rating is 0.1m-0.3m away from actual rating
2 points= predicted rating is 0.4m-0.5m away from actual rating
1 point= predicted rating is 0.6m-1m away from actual rating
0 points= predicted rating is more than 1m away from actual rating

I'll make a table ranking everyone who played by adding up all the points together. There'll be a different table every week, so it doesn't matter if you missed a week.

There will also be a few other leaderboards:
- an overall Season 2 leaderboard by points
- an overall Season 2 leaderboard by weekly average (so it doesnt matter if you miss a week)

I hope everyone enjoys the game!

Can I just add. Would it not be easier to run the weeks as they appear in the TV listings magazines?? The problem for me - and many others too I guess - is that we don't easily know what the shows on 12th and 13th April are up against; due to the listings not being out until next Tuesday. If the week was run as the listings magazine, then next week would run Saturday 5th April to Friday 11th April ie all in the same weeks TV listings, making it much easier to see what the above programmes are up against?
Feel free to PM me with your thoughts.
Good thread by the way.

You can use the radio times site to check what they're up against. That's what I do anyway.

Good thread by the way.
The schedule for this week is already up on www.radiotimes.com . I've done this method for the last 13 weeks, and it's worked really great to be honest. I can understand where you're coming from, about having it from Saturday-Friday. But I think it would be better to keep it how it's been for the last 13 weeks. Also it's more natural to have a week starting on Monday and finishing on Sunday- just my opinion.

TBH, I can see why you're doing it this way as it's the way BARB do their weekly ratings. It's just that it's difficult to find the weekend after nexts ratings in written (ie magazine) listings. Do you know what I mean? I know what is on this Saturday as I have a TV listings magazine (starts Sat) but I don't know what is on Saturday 12th April.
Would you able to do us a little favour on this thread by posting up the listings for the Sat/Sun shows so we can see them without having to trawl through t'internet - which is where I'm assuming you get them from?
Oh yes. Can you confirm if Pusing Daisies is starting on ITV1 on w/e of 12/13 April? Ta very much.

I think starting afresh was a great idea, rzt, and I would urge anyone reading to have a go: it's a ridiculously addictive game, and even if you're really bad at predicting (like I am), if the luck's with you you can still come out on top.

Anyway, my week 1 predictions:

1. New Tricks - Mon 21.00 BBC1: 4.7
2. Uefa Champions League Live: Liverpool vs. Arsenal - TUE 19.30 ITV1: 6.8
3. The Apprentice - WED 21.00 BBC1: 5.5
4. Who Do You Think You Are? - THU 21.00 BBC1: 4.9
5. My Family - FRI 21.00 BBC1: 5.2
6. Doctor Who – SAT 18.15 BBC1: 7.1
7. All Star Mr and Mrs- SAT 19.00 ITV1: 4.9
8. Britain’s Got Talent- SAT 20.00 ITV1: 7.1
9. Love Soup- SAT 21.40 BBC1: 3.4
10. Foyle’s War- SUN 20.00 ITV1: 5.9

Backup Ratings:
1. The Fixer – MON 21.00 ITV1: 4.3
2. The Bill- WED 20.00 ITV1: 4.9
3. Traffic Cops - WED 20.00 BBC1: 4.2
4. Holby Blue- THU 20.00 BBC1: 4.6
5. Benidorm - FRI 21.00 ITV1: 4.5

Yeah but those listings for the weekend are not confirmed til the Thursday, and timings often change, in fact there was one time that a programme which we were meant to predict disappeared completely - Outtake TV which was replaced by The Vicar of Dibley. So i'm with BringBack Thames on this one.

I completely understand, and actually thinking about it, your idea is really good. Saturday-Fridays would be more effective than the current Monday-Sundays, because of the scheduling factor. For e.g. I wrote Doctor Who is on at 6.15, but now it's changed to 6.45! Hmmm... I'll have a think about what to do in future weeks.

I dont really have the time to copy and paste the whole Sat/Sun schedule, but you can see it here: www.radiotimes.com .

According to the current schedules, Pushing Daisies is starting on 12th April at 21.00.

Yeah but timings can change any time - i.e. if live sport overruns or there is a big breaking news story. I don't really think switching to Sat-Fri will make much difference to be honest. And anyway, that's where the backup ratings come into play, isn't it?

The show got about 7m IIRC so 5m for a repeat in its usual slot sounds perfectly plausible. Remembering New Tricks used to get 6-7m for its repeats on Monday.

Good to see a new influx of players.

I didn't say it wasn't, but the poster was basing their prediction for New Tricks on a new episode, so I thought they may be doing that for Who Do You Think You Are? as they obviously do not have a TV schedule with them as they did not know that NT is a repeat
