MYKA - Amazing new device might change the way we watch/record TV

Remember that Magic Box you had always wished for? You know, the one that would finally free your PC of all your favorite movies and shows and put them where you can enjoy them better in all their high-def glory -- your TV?

Well, we'd like to introduce Myka - the Magic Box you've been waiting for. And Myka has brought a powerful friend to the party: BitTorrent, the global standard for delivering high-quality files over the Internet......

http://www.myka.tv/

------------

Looks pretty cool and prices look good too. I'm having one!

Obviously the first of many of these kind of devices.....wonder if these might have an impact on broadcast tv

I can see this being a toy for those naughty people that enjoy downloading illegal content from the net.

When I first looked at the site it looked a bit unprofessionally put together and I thought it was a scam just collecting money for 'pre-orders' and then vanishing in to the night, but it appears to be on a few reputable techie chat sites.

I'll sit back and see if the preorders actually get sent out and see if the site looks a little more professional. I'd never order from an online company that only has an email address for contact details.

Not sure if the products for me to be honest, but will be interesting to see if it takes off if it's legit.

I don't need another box under my TV. I'm happy with using torrents which automatically download in to a folder which my xbox360 then plays wireless. I have to do very little apart from pick the things I want to download.

Myka will be available in the summer of 2008. Like all new products, we will be in short supply at the beginning. Reserve your slot now. It's FREE. We're going to ship based on the date that orders come in, so if you want to be first in line, sign up below. We won't charge your card until Myka is ready to ship. We're using Google Checkout for security. It will show $0.00 when you click the 'Buy Now' button. We'll send you an email acceptance about 1 week before shipment - so you can always change your mind. We will not ship your unit without your acceptance.

Taking 0.00 for pre-orders doesnt sound like a very good scam to me....what do you think

This thread looks like advertising, not General Discussion. At least use some italics if you're quoting from the website.

Thank you so much for your contribution, but your comment just takes the thread off topic ( which isnt advertising) which I believe DS say this about (note the italics): - Please ensure your reply is constructive and adds to the discussion.

So.....
What do you think of the product? Would you use one?

Balls to that, get a TivX player 1080p mkv goodness. I don't see what this offers beyond that and it won't do 1080p. Come to think of it how does this do anything better than popcorn hour? and I've seen them so I know they exist.

I'd like to know for sure that what I'd download (and upload) using BitTorrent via Myka wouldn't get me in trouble.

Can you confirm?

PS Thanks for adding the italics in post #6.

If that's what happens, but it's easy enough to write that on a site and do something completely different isn't it. (normally I wouldn't use so many rolly eye smileys, but...)

I'm not saying it is a scam, just that something didn't seem right about the website to be honest. I'm sure it will be fine, but I'll wait until orders roll out and I know it's safe to buy from before I part with cash as it doesn't feel too professional and you never know if it will go under.

I'm thinking along similar lines, you can do pretty what this does in so many other ways with established technology.

I'm sure it will appeal to some, but there are other ways to achieve this with stuff that most people interested in this sort of stuff will have already around the home.

TBH, that's how I feel about the site, why I'm suspicious.

Couldn't see any mention of PeerGuardian or any similar P2P firewall. Would it be risky to download illegal files directly to MYKA?

Are you connected to the company at all? Sorry if I come across all stroppy, but you're very bullish about a device that seemingly isn't ready yet, that seemingly glosses over the issues of sharing content illegally.

I saw a blog about it on Wired here which confirms that it'll play any torrent file you point it at, and already has a special deal going with IsoHunt users, for example.

It sounds intriguing, but the website does seem a bit dodgy - no contact information apart from email? And no company name, ffs? So I'm waiting to see what happens. And definitely not giving them my credit card number in the meantime.

Not stroppy exactly, just a bit "Neighbourhood Watch with alot of free time" type character.

Its an exciting product on its way and I'm excited about it too. I dont see that as a problem.

With respect to illegal content, you cant ask a manufacturer to take responsibility for illegal use of their legal legitimate product.

The ad hominem attack doesn't inspire confidence in your arguments. I'm motivated to ask questions because the product area is something I've thought long and hard about.

That's disingenuous. If you're going to be an advocate, I'd at least expect you to be up-front with potential purchasers about the risks you're exposing them to.

What legal BitTorrent sites do you recommend to use with myka?

I'm not doubting what you say, but I am curious as to how you know it's genuine? Are you in some way involved with this?

Well, it'll be a great way to exchange legal home movies straight onto your TV using the BitTorrent protocol won't it. It's a good idea that I hope takes off.
No need to alert, tho' I think that it should probably be in C+N, DVR or even PD rather than GD.
