A Dell SC440 Server for £117 delivered?!

Yes, unbelivable but true....

http://forum.dmxdimension.com/f8/che...-delivery-290/

Thanks to DMX Dimension for finding this deal... get a Core2 duo 1.8Ghz server from Dell for an amazing price - it includes delivery and VAT!

It doesn't have an o/s and obviously it's a server so don't grumble about lack of graphics, memory or sound card!

If you want to knock up a home server or small business server fill your boots!

I can't resist ordering one!

One word of warning, if I recall correctly, these servers are not suitable for homes, unless you are hard of hearing. When you switch them on, get ready for a LOUD Woosh! That is so then they can clear any dust that has got clogged in, also they can run rather loudly.

Reviews suggest it's actually very quiet (but a very good point to mention!)

http://www.trustedreviews.com/pcs/re...rEdge-SC440/p1

Also it should be noted this has graphics limited to 1280x1024 and only a PCI graphics card could be added (NOT PCI-Express)

Also on the Dell community forums people have put XP Pro/Home/Vista on this without much trouble (dig out that old floppy drive!)

The basic spec is just a basic desktop hardware in a server case, once you put server grade hard drives, processor and RAM in it's not really that good a deal. For the desktop hardware, why not just go for Vostro or Optiplex if you consider that you get a monitor, proper graphics card and OS thrown in the deal is actually better.

I wouldn't suggest it would make a good desktop PC but it would make a fine basic server for someone who already has software and maybe a spare hard drive etc. Servers never generally make good desktops...in fact Dell make sure you can't make this SC440 into a useful desktop easily so it won't damage it's desktop sales.

If you factor in an opertating system, more ram, sound card, DVD rewriter, keyboard, mouse and monitor it doesn't make a good buy. BUT if you're after a server to store music, files, email and such like, to be used as a server alongside your desktop computers then it's a good deal.

I'd agree with Smiggs that it's better to go for a proper desktop like the Vostro or Optiplex if you want a desktop computer.... having purchased a couple of Vostros, I'd say they're good all rounders.
