Galaxy 106 Scotland

Global Radio are progressing with the takeover of GCap and have repreived the struggling X-fm in Central Scotland which they will hopefully rebrand and relaunch as Galaxy.

Its the missing link for the 15-35's in the area and will gain lots of younger listeners who will leave Bauer and GMG to battle over the mainstream 25-54's with the hybrid formats on offer on Clyde 1 and Real Radio.

It wont matter if the majority of the output is networked either as the Galaxy brand and music mix will be huge hit delivering a format that has long been missing from the FM dial in Central Scotland.

Bring it on soon .... its the radio station that Beat 106 nearly was and the format that will really shake up the current duopoly in the region.

It will have to be, wavejocjglw. The numbers simply don't stacl up for a stand-alone regional primarily targetting the under 25s in Central Scotland otherwise.

Beat 106 faced enormous costs providing 'big name' local dance jocks at the weekend while advertising was limited due to negative perceptions of the target audience.

So yes, the only way Galaxy 106 can work is as a quasi-national station with as little local programming as OFCOM let them away with, probably just weekday breakfast and drive.

Dont think it would last too long if it carried mostly the programming from down south , reason being mostly the difference in dance tastes .
Up here the 180 bpm stuff seems to be more popular than the formats galaxy down south play , so not too sure the token couple of shows would be enough to establish its self up here .
You only have to look how easy it was for xfm to loose the beat 106 listeners when they started their brand up here .

They've also got www.galaxyeastmidlands.co.uk but that only goes to a holding page of the company which registered the domain.

Strange how London and Scotland does go to the main site. Hmmmm, sign of things to come.

Good find.... no surprise though!! The URL now links to a menu page showing the current Galaxy stations.

Will networked shows make a difference? I doubt it as R'n'B is pretty stong with younger folks and a quick browse around the shelves of local supermarkets and CD stores shows that Clubland and MOS compilations are big business in Scotland just as they are elsewhere in the UK.

Beat 106 with an emphisis on Dance music gained a 15% reach and the populist Galaxy brand with the current output should do even better as it provides an all day music station catering to the needs of youngsters who don't want Simply Red, Annie Lennox and the Simple Minds.

Good to see there is some forward thinking and some evidence that Galaxy 106 Scotland could be on its way!

You can't read into anything into Global owning www.galaxyscotland.co.uk or www.galaxylondon.co.uk.

The former was registered in 2006, and the latter as far back as 2001 - it's because Galaxy's on DAB in both areas.

The fact that Galaxy may potentially soon appear on FM in London & Scotland is pure coincidence - albeit a lucky one!

From where I am sitting a Galaxy or KISS in Central Scotland was obvious. The problem was that GCap had the available licence and the only youth brand they had was the indie/rock X-fm one which limited its appeal.

Good forward thinking by Chrysalis/Global and the prospect for a local Central Scotland Galaxy rebrand appears bright.

I had a read at the public file on that website , and it seems yorkshire does 13 hours localy a day and around 80 hours in total per week .
I would imagine ofcom would want similiar for central scotland , if of course it is a change to galaxy .

Where have you been?

Galaxy Yorkshire (and the rest) will be networked outside of Breakfast and Drive shortly.

and all weekend as well.

Bad enough having what was supposed to be a 'dance and R'n'B station playing almost no dance but last i checked turning XFM into Galaxy would radically change the charactor of the station and thus unable to go ahead

Galaxy's dance/RnB skew is probably 60/40 in favour of dance these days if anything here in God's own county.

Birmingham is not a true Galaxy station. It has to have a different playlist to the rest, and so isn't comparable.

oh and as for turning XFM into Galaxy.... for the same reason Beat 106 was able to morph into a slightly strange XFM, it will be allowed, should Global go for it.

I hope they do.

It was a strange move in the first place - Scotland likes its dance MORE than anywhere else, and GCAP ditched the majority of that particular genre.

A number of posters have made similar claims about Scotland and dance music.

On what basis do you think so?

Guess it's a matter of let us do this or the station closes. I'm not sure if Gcap still have control or not but they wanted to close a number of XFM stations maybe all apart from London. Oh well i'm content with listening to music on the PC most of the time. Not much on FM/MW or DAB i like to be honest

I lived up there for a time, and know a few people up there.

Not much, I admit, but it definately seems more popular up there than down here.

I take it you don't agree then?

I am 64 and addicted to trance...I also like trance related stuff..btw I am Scottish and miss Beat 106 and mourn the loss of Dave Pearce dance anthems on Radio 1 at 7 on Sundays so if 106.1 has Galaxy with lots of dance on it, this is one wrinkled Scot who will be happy.
