We'd love to be able to announce that the deal to buy Planet Rock is all done and dusted but I'm afraid that we have to keep holding our breath for yet another month. The deadline for the sale completion has been extended until 30th May, while the interested parties continue their negotiations with GCap Media. Thank you all for your continued messages of support, your passion for Planet Rock has been an inspiration. We should have more news very soon. In the mean time we hope you'll enjoy at least one more month of Planet Rock. (Planet Rock newsletter/Analoguesat) 2. BBC radio chief Jenny Abramsky has attacked Peter Bazalgette over his comments that Radio 1 and 2 should be privatised claiming such a move would "promote cultural elitism".More Sub Req’d 3. The Local Radio Company has gained Ofcom approval to relocate four radio stations with close neighbours, and allow eight stations to share weekday daytime output. Stations allowed to move out of town are Vale FM, Arrow FM, Mix 96 and 3TR FM. .More 4. RAJAR has abandoned its trial of an electronic alternative to its diary-based ratings system after spending over three million pounds researching the scheme. Instead, RAJAR is looking to investigate the introduction of a new online digital survey. More 5. Ofcom has rejected GMG Radio's request to drop jazz music from it's Smooth Radio stations in London and in the North-West, after the results of a public consultation More 6. GCap Media has ditched plans to sell two of its three Xfm radio stations outside of London following the group's £375m buyout by Global Radio. Fru Hazlitt, the GCap chief executive, announced in February that the Xfm stations in Scotland, Manchester and south Wales would be sold or their licences would be handed back to Ofcom as part of cost-cutting measures totalling £9m a year.Story XFM South Wales, launched in November, is still up for sale. More 7. Ofcom have published details of UTV's request to move Stockport station Imagine FM out of its TSA to Warrington. The regulators believe the request would "substantially alter the character of the service" and have launched a public consultation.Full Story 8. Ofcom has awarded community radio licences in the following areas: * Moss Side, Central Manchester * North Manchester * Bolton * Lincoln * Newark on Trent, North Nottinghamshire * Grantham, Lincolnshire 9. Ireland’s public broadcaster RTÉ has extended its trial of digital radio technology and its new digital radio stations to Cork and Limerick cities. This move means that 44% of the population now have access to digital radio. (MediaNetwork) 10. An analogue switch-off in the next two years would be “premature”, according to talkSPORT’s chief executive. In an interview with RadioWorks, Scott Taunton says he believes the “thought of switching off services in 2009, given the number of sets that exist and the lack of DAB sets elsewhere would be premature”. SKY Channels, etc; ..Week# 18 Page Two
* * * * * * Newsie Bits 1. Captions reminding viewers to get ready for digital switchover will appear on televisions in the Scottish Borders for the first time from May 6, 2008. Viewers still watching analogue services in the Border TV region will see the on-screen messages six months before these signals are switched off and replaced with Freeview channels. The captions, lasting one minute, will appear on BBC One, BBC Two, ITV1, Channel 4 and Five during programmes over a two-week period. More 2. TV looks set to receive a record fine over viewer deception relating to a range of shows including Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, Soapstar Superstar and The X Factor, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal. Negotiations between media regulator Ofcom and ITV on the exact amount of the fine will go down to the wire, with an announcement possible this week. It is understood to be in the region of £4m. More 3. ITV is "running the numbers" on the cost of handing back some or all of its ITV1 licences to regulator Ofcom. The move would mean ITV giving up its status as a public service broadcaster and switching from analogue to digital-only transmission of its main network ITV1 earlier than expected. More(Analoguesat) 4. A report on the UK's first digital television switchover has been published, highlighting lessons to be applied across the rest of the country as analogue signals are turned off over the next four years. The report from Digital UK, the independent body established to co-ordinate switchover, is based on research into the experiences of 25,000 households in Copeland, Cumbria, including the town of Whitehaven. In a two-stage switchover during October and November 2007, four analogue television channels were replaced with approximately 20 Freeview channels. Full Story 5. A London newspaper report states that European TV giant RTL and Haim Saban are jointly looking at acquiring Sky’s 18% stake in ITV. Sky has been ordered to divest itself of at least 10% of its overall 17.9% holding in ITV (acquired in November 2006 for £940m). RTL already controls the UK’s (channel) Five, and the London Sunday Telegraph says RTL has held talks with Sky and renewed its interest. 6. UK broadcaster Sky has unveiled further details of its joint venture with Sony to release a video download service for the PlayStation Portable. The service will be called Go!View and will launch this summer in Europe, offering entertainment, comedy, sport and movies for the PSP More 7. ITV has made a selection of its award-winning programming available for download from the iTunes Store in the UK. iTunes customers can now choose from over 260 hours of ITV programming, including series such as Lewis and Cold Feet, classics such as Brideshead Revisited and Gerry Anderson's vintage classic "Captain Scarlet". Additional programming will follow throughout the year, including Inspector Morse, The Prisoner, The Saint and the adaptations of Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and Emma. All shows can be purchased from £1.89 per episode and then viewed on a Mac or PC, iPod with video, iPhone or on a widescreen TV with Apple TV. Shows will also be available to purchase as complete series. More 8. Digital UK has announced that the West Country TV region will start the switch to digital terrestrial television on 8th April, 2009. Analogue broadcasts will be turned off first at the Beacon Hill transmitter group, followed by the Stockland Hill transmitter group on 6th May, 2009. The remaining transmitter groups will follow between July and September 2009 to compete switchover in the region. More 9. Freesat Launch date planned for end of May. Companies involved: Phase 1 - DSG, Comet, JL Phase 2 - CIH Euronics, M & S, Argos, Tesco Phase 3 - non-Euronics independents in 2009 Target retail prices: Freesat non-HD (box only) £35 excluding dish. Freesat HD (box only) £99 excluding dish. Freesat HD PVR (box only) £149 excluding dish. No mention of non-HD PVR's, and surprisingly (to me) a non-PVR HD box. The BBC are specifying a 60cm dish ONLY, I wonder if that's simply to avoid having two different dishes, depending where you are? Still no installers arranged, Freesat are still wanting a £50 install charge, with the installer only getting £35 of it. Apparently the Humax boxes are being assembled by Pioneer at a plant in Wakefield, Yorkshire. Many thanks to Nigel Goodwin’s thread 10. Ofcom has unveiled details of a major upgrade of the UK DTT platform that will allow viewers using new receiving equipment to receive up to four high-definition channels as digital switchover is completed in the UK in 2012. According to the regulator, the upgrade can take place without the loss of existing television services currently available to viewers on DTT. Full Story 11. Ofcom have confirmed that Five has been given listed event status. The same as BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and Channel 4. This means that it is now in the category of free television channels which must be given a genuine opportunity to bid for the right to broadcast listed sports events such as the highlights of Cricket Test Matches played in England. a. Ofcom is satisfied that Five has met the two qualifying conditions, which are : b. The service is provided "free" at reception. c. The service is received by at least 95% of the UK population. d. The full statement can be found Here (John Murray) 12. Setanta Sports has signed a five-year deal to screen the Indian Premier League cricket in the UK. The pay-TV broadcaster has signed the UK TV rights for the multimillion-pound annual competition, which begins on Friday 18th April.Story 13. UK television regulator Ofcom has admitted that almost 250,000 UK homes will lose any sort of terrestrial signal when analogue TV is switched off. Many experts think the numbers might be much higher Story Readers wanting a detailed examination of Ofcom’s figure can see the document can do so here (in PDF format) (rapidtvnews) 14. Nine out of ten adults are aware of digital television switchover, according to new research from Digital UK and Ofcom. The Digital UK/Ofcom Tracker Survey at December 2007 indicates national awareness of switchover has reached 89%, up from 66% at the beginning of Digital UK's public information campaign in May 2006. The figure rises to 96% in the Border TV region, which is set to start the switch at the Selkirk transmitter on 6th November. More 15. Digital switchover body Digital UK are advising residents in the Scottish Border region in anticipation of switching off the analogue signal in the region in November 2008. The group posted letters to every home in the region following the successful switch to digital in Whitehaven. The analogue signals for BBC1, ITV and Channel 4 were switched off in Whitehaven one by one over 90 minutes from 2am 14th November to be replaced by 20 Freeview channels and 10 radio stations. Full Story 16. BBC, ITV to launch Free-sat in 2008 The BBC and ITV have confirmed plans to form a joint venture company to launch Free-sat, a guaranteed free-to-view satellite TV proposition, by spring. The BBC Trust and ITV have said that Free-sat would ensure that free public service broadcasting would be available to people outside the post-analogue switch off Freeview footprint. The two broadcasters have been working with manufacturers and retailers ahead of today's announcement and have confirmed that consumers will be able to choose between a range of standards-based devices to access the service for a one-time fee. Standard definition and high definition boxes will be available, as will HD personal video recorders and integrated digital TVs. Full details on the BBC Trust's Free-sat decision also Channel 4 has expressed interest in joining the Free-sat proposition (D.S./Analoguesat) * * * * * * Shorts Sky's timetable for the shuffles: (Strathclyde) • International, Gaming and Dating: 7th July Shopping, Religion: 21st July Movies(subs & FTA), Music, News, specialist: 4th August Lifestyle: 18th August Entertainment: 1st September • FX HD has replaced FX +1 on 205 in the EPG. • It can now be confirmed from the info on the biz info site. Older Sky HD boxes have both HDMI and component outputs; however, of the two, only the HDMI connection supports HDCP - high bandwidth digital content protection - which is designed to make copying content in high definition move difficult. (Dave West, D.S. Media Correspondent) Full Story • Sky has confirmed that its high definition boxes will get a new version of electronic programme guide software this year. • Ofcom has unveiled details of a major upgrade of the UK DTT platform that will allow viewers using new receiving equipment to receive up to four high-definition channels as digital switchover is completed in the UK in 2012. Full Story • Attention HD lovers every where, just when you thought it was safe to leave the showroom. Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) sees its 8K x 4K ultrahigh-resolution broadcasting, which it has labelled Super Hi-Vision , as the next generation of consumer TV. Now NHK has taken a step toward realizing that vision by demonstrating working prototypes of key component systems. But it might be a few decades before the technology makes it to market. And the breakneck pace at which communications, broadcasting and information technologies are transforming themselves leaves a question hanging over the whole enterprise: Twenty or more years from now, will consumers want it? (medianetwork) • Satellite is forecast to be the dominant high-definition TV platform in Europe over the next four years, while in the US digital cable will dominate the pay-HDTV market. That's the conclusion of IMS Research's recently published report, The Future of High-Definition TV—2007 Edition. IMS said the worldwide market for HDTV would grow strongly over the next four years to nearly 148m households. Of those, nearly 41% would receive HDTV programming via satellite. "other channels"
All you clever clogs with your FTA receivers...can you clarify something for me?
If a channel (not on the Sky EPG) only broadcasts part of the day, am I correct in assuming that even if you've added it to your channel list, there will be no programme info at all available when the channel is off-air? Taaa.. |

At some pint in May I guess we can keep a look out for tests for The Paranormal Channel
The channel should be going in to the entertainment section of the epg on 9th June see http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a9488...l-channel.html |

I wonder if they will accept EPG 210 (as it stands), or whether they will try and buy out a channel lower down the EPG? Without a lot of promotion, I can see this channel getting over-looked routinely if it's down the dark end of the entertainment section as it doesn't have a sister channel with a higher profile and/or a better EPG slot to help it out. |
