BBC iPlayer on "On Demand" has launched

Hi,

Just noticed that after a few minutes (at least) of downtime to the on demand services, iPlayer programmes are now accessible from the catch-up menus.

It uses all the iPlayer streams, rather than the dual programs which we previously had from catch-up.

Pity .. the picture quality of the iplayer recordings is inferior to those on catch-up.

I disagree, iPlayer seems less pixilated and dark? Catch-up programmes were very fuzzy.

I can't access iPlayer from there. When I select iPlayer and press OK, or press 1, nothing happens. If I press 2 to access 4oD everything is fine... Hmm...

Ex-telewest with a V+ box here. Can't access iPlayer through the red button either anymore. When I select a programme, it doesn't play.

Yeah, I think it was a fault last night, but try it now it should work.

They seem to have put the programmes in reverse order now, but I quite like that

VOD does seem to get better and better!

Can't find it here in Birmingham (ex TW) on any of the menus

But that may simpy be a case of the VOD problem that is the menus and its haphazhardness.

Anyone got a key press guide to get to it ?

  • Catch up TV
  • Channels
  • BBC Iplayer

Or
if you go to the all by day section anything you click on from the BBC will be content from the iplayer complete with iplayer graphics and intro. They are no longer using any hard drive recoreded content.

Cheers mate

Correction: IT IS here ( thought it may have been a first page item or a separate item much higher but its there

Now if they could just sort out delviering the upgrade on the BB L ( its not free but a price realignment before anyone adds) before the end of a normal summer not the end of the year and at least try and offer a FTA based HD service ( 1 channel does not make a service) I'll be happy as a pig in ........

But its a good start. Catch up on a TV is much better and convenient than on a PC ( ITV,CH4& CH5 please note!)

I really like the way it is all properly integrated now

It's good that you can access all the BBC iPlayer programmes through the normal Catch Up TV menus like "All Days" and "All A-Z" for those that prefer that interface but there's also the direct links to the BBC iPlayer system and I like the way the video preview window now shows a BBC or 4oD logo when you are looking at the programme details for one of their shows.

Yeah, thanks, it works now. Finally.

Maybe in future it will just load the iPlayer interface onto what you were watching instead of switching to BBC1 and then putting it on top of that? Seems a little odd to me.

Anyway, I'm just happy it works now!

Good to see the programmes are accessible via that standard VOD system too and not just iPlayer as iPlayer is slow. Found that the standard VOD system is a little quicker than previous, wonder if that's had a little tweak.

Yes, the picture quality isn't as good as before. More compressed and everything seems to appear filmic due to programmes going out 25p instead of 50i now.

Not particularly bothered, as I'll just carry on using the VM VOD interface, the BBC iPlayer interface is too slow and clunky - and I thought the VM system was slow and clunky - however that seems to have picked up a little.

iPlayer interface is much more intuitive though, allowing you to search for programmes using the number keys (alphabeticised [did i just make this word up?] numeric keypad).

alphabeticised - close it's alphabetised

It's just so slow, it's a lot quicker to just use the VM VOD menu and scroll down each page almost instantly.

Ahh, ok thanks.

Yeah it is sluggish but I much prefer that than going on the PC and waiting for programmes to download with the PC version of iPlayer. Plus I just don't like watching programmes on my computer, that 15.4 inch screen just doesn't cut it. LOL.

I prefer to watch them on the TV too. I just get the BBC programmes via

Catch-Up TV - All Days and find them through the list of all the others.

And not Catch-Up TV, All Channels, iPlayer.

Just watching Working Lunch and it's just so awful in this filmic quality (or whatever the technical term is!). Great to have the increased selection but a shame about the quality. Why is it like this?

It's much better having it in reverse order because i only want to watch shows i missed on the night. Day time tv does not interest me in the slightest so it's great not having to trawl through all the day time content to get to the prime time content.

Not sure. I've just watched this week's Russia on iPlayer and it was fine, but an episode of the IT Crowd (C4) was pretty poor.
With BBC stuff I think they may have compromised some of the iPlayer quality if the progs were being stored twice (once on iPlayer, again in Catch Up). Or it could be that they're still fine tuning and it'll improve in the coming weeks.

Only problem I have with it is you get taken to BBC One and you don't get returned to the channel you was on when you exit the iPlayer

Yeah, reversed order is great.

So much easier, as whether it's a BBC programme, Ch4 programme, Virgin programme, it' usually the evening / night ones I want to watch, with them all now listed in reversed time order - it's great.
