Setanta to show Serie A!

Just been mentioned by James Richardson at the end of the Football Matters show that Setanta will be showing Serie A next season.

Next Season? As in 2009/2010?

That's excellent news! Hopefully James Richardson will be involved in some capacity as well. With Setanta adding studio coverage to their French and German football this season maybe James could host the live Italian games once again? Can't see Gazetta returning though.

Cripes! They already had more football than you could shake a stick at this season! This is really good news though. I'd be amazed if JR doesn't anchor the Serie A coverage as well. Well done Sultana!

I am guessing they will show the saturday night game or they will show the sunday night game and then show a French Ligue 1 game on saturday instead of sunday night.

Before they had US PGA coverage they use to show an italian game on Setanta Sports 1 for example while a French Ligue 1 game on Setanta Sports 2. They would good times. They could show the Sunday afternoon game but then they are going head to head against Sky's EPL coverage. Not sure if they gonna do this.

If they kept PGA on the Golf channel only there would be no problem with the sunday evening game.

I'd imagine that Setanta will still want to have some golf on Setanta 1, given that Setanta Golf isn't available through Top-Up TV etc...

Time to turn Setanta Golf into Setanta Sports 3 I feel, so that Setanta can put the final round of the golf on Setanta Sports 1 (so that DTT subscribers can watch), and put something else (such as European football) on both Setanta Sports 2 and 3 (say, French and Italian evening matches). I don't see that happening though, sadly. They could also show live French or Italian football in the Saturday night slot on Setanta Sports 2 in which they show delayed coverage of a Bundesliga match from the afternoon.

On the subject of whether they'd put an afternoon match up against Sky's Premier League coverage, they have previously put a Bundesliga game on at 4pm, so up against Sky's main PL game. Therefore, I can quite easily see them doing the same with a 2pm Sunday Serie A game.

I hope Setanta manage to show the evening games in widescreen (they are in Italy, so it shouldn't be too difficult to sort out).

Finally, do we know any details about the package that Setanta have bought? Last season it was discussed a fair bit on these boards that Five only bought the rights to the Sunday afternoon match, and not the evening ones.

The only downside to this is that we might have to hear more of Jock Brown...

great news - Setantas football portfolio is beggining to make Sky look very expensive for football fans in comparison.

Wonder who'll be commentating? Might they dig old Peter Brackley out? Either way i hope its not Tony Jones who never sounded "into" the games enough on five.

I hope Jim Proudfoot does the commentary again. He always did a good job last time it was on Setanta and was very knowledgeable about the Italian game.

I'm not sure whether that dispute has been sorted out yet. Hopefully it has so we can see some games from the San Paolo.

Unfortunately if not then we might have to wait until 2010 when the Serie A rights will be sold collectively.

I have to echo the sentiments expressed here about Setanta picking up Serie A. However, I hope they do the coverage justice. Recently their European football has been hit and miss at best, and I hope we won't end up missing the big games because they are on at the "wrong" time for Setanta.

It would be great to see Setanta turn the Golf channel into Setanta Sports 3, or better yet get themselves a dedicated football channel, something I've banged on about before on various threads here.

I do find it strange that they show so much golf on the two normal Setanta channels when they have a dedicated golf channel.

Hopefully we'll see 2 or 3 games per weekend. Is it too much to ask for one of the Saturday games, a Sunday afternoon game and the Sunday evening game?

I find it strange that they have considerably more football than golf, yet see a need for a dedicated channel for the latter.

I agree with the comments above that Golf should be relaunched as "Setanta Sports 3". Only trouble is, who owns 425 on the Sky EPG so as to get them all next to each other?

Right I just had a look at the Setanta schedule for this weekend and on Saturday 30th August:

Setanta Sports 1 at 20:00 is PGA Golf
Setanta Sports 2 at 19:00 is Live European Football
(Teams TBC). Now Sampdoria are playing Inter Milan on this day with Kick off at 19:30 so I am pretty sure it will be this game. The late evening game in France would Kick off at 20:00 so it is not a French game. Plus they are showing Marseille vs Sochaux at 23:00 on delayed coverage.

Sunday 31st August

Setanta Sports 1 at 20:00 is PGA Tour Golf
Setanta Sports 2 a 19:00 is Live European Football
(Teams TBC). Fiorentina vs Juventus is scheduled to Kick off at 19:30 so it could be this game or they will be showing St Etienne vs Lyon whick Kicks off at 20:00.

They never do an hour build up for French Football though. I got a feeling they will be showing the Italian game. Now I am not sure what they are gonna do in the future but they might just switch between Italian and French whenever they choose as they need to accommodate PGA Golf coverage. They cant show the French sunday afternoon game as they are showing Bayern Munich vs. Hertha Berlin this weekend. If Live Coverage of French Ligue 1 gets ditched Setanta are gonna get a nasty email from me..

I have no idea how they are gonna squeeze in Portuguese Super Liga coverage. Are they showing that this year?

There's only three weeks left of the PGA Tour playoffs so until the new season next year that'll leave a gap on SS1 on Saturday and Sunday nights.
