They havn't really gone about finding the right name and it was only decided last month that they'd use Absolute.

If they please themselves about using the name they had from day one how much of the other consultation is the typical old GWR "Radio Check up" dummy "make the listeners" think their comments count"??
OK, they called it after their own company, but it is exactly the sort of name they said they were searching for - adaptable and simple and with resonances of what they are about. And, importantly, as one they already owned. I'm sure they have gone through literally thousands of possibilities.

Absolute doesn't mean nothing. My dictionary says:

Absolute - complete, without restriction, independent, not relative, utter, out-and-out

They are a pretty good match for the brand values they want to aspire to.

I don't think settling on Absolute means that they weren't looking for input, either to confirm their choice, or to search for another name. But, considering even the small sample on Digital Spy can't agree on what would be a good name, how could you hope the millions of Virgin listeners could ever choose one on their own?

It's a decent enough name.
It's better than having a radio station named after somebody who has never had sex.

I quite like the name. I think it's clever and very workable.

I don't disagree with them choosing it.

I think it has the potential to work well.

I just think the marketing spin got a bit out of control with the touchy feely stuff .

I work in marketing I know spin when I see it - I think it up and I write it. But don't ask people to help "search" for the name when you already know what you are going to call it. It breaks the layer of trust. They would have been better in hindsight not to have made so much of the help us understand the brand and the name if they knew what they were going to choose.

And I can't believe they sat around a table with lots of names on cards and then someone said - "hey - We're called Absolute Radio - why don't we call it absolute radio !!??
Wacky - crazy idea - but lets run it up the mast and see who salutes?"

Treat me with at least the intelect of a GCAP morning crew female presenter!!

But I'm not convinced that they had decided on Absolute Radio when this process started. OK, it was obviously a possibility, but as you work in marketing you know they will have tested, researched and examined a number of strong alternatives to see what their audience thought of each.

Yes, I suspect that they probably did some research with a list of possible names and added 'Absolute' to the list to see how it did... and it came out at the top

The Virgin could still reunite again.

Absolute 80's Hour? Absolute nothing than music and no chat?

Likewise for Virgin Radio Xtreme:

www.absolutextreme.co.uk

Basically excatly the same holding pages for both Classic Rock & Xtreme stations. Both want you to subscribe to their VIP "Treatment" accounts but of course, you can still listen to both stations online

Tim Shaw on evenings followed by Iain on lates would surely be a killer line-up.

I'm wondering about what they will do with Xtreme - they will rebrand and keep it as a non-stop indie rock music station or they will try to make it up a bit with DJs?

I agree that would be good although I have a feeling in my water it's going to be Tim on lates - hopefully it won't affect Iain on Sundays although.

Pleased to hear Geoff is moving (back) to drivetime - it's something I've been saying should happen for a while now so look forward to hearing that as I don't really have a drivetime show of choice at the moment.

Having seen the logo am I the only one that thinks its a bit stupid to have incorporated a 'fast forward' sign into it.
